As promised, here's the second half of Astaris' origin from the "Cosmo Police Justy" series as translated by Viz.
In the previous issue, for those who don't want to open another tab and check, powerful esper policeman Justy was forced to kill powerful esper criminal Magnum Vega in front of Magnum's young daughter Astaris. Astaris promptly vows to kill Justy when she grows up. Which might not be so frightening except that "when I'm older and stronger" turns out to be about an hour later. Now physically an adult and possessed of formidable psychic powers, but the personality of a five-year-old, Astaris accidentally kills a greedy innkeeper who was keeping her prisoner, and later two men who attempted to rape Astaris.
The Cosmo Police learn of the mysterious attacker, Justy returning to the planet to try to deal with Astaris. Although he appears outwardly calm at her drastic change in appearance, Justy is taken off guard by Astaris' new power and ferocity. He takes a psychic spear to the chest.

Read left to right, 10 2/3 pages of 32.
As Astaris backs off a bit, surprised at her first taste of combat, Bolba rushes up to Justy, who's sunk to his knees.

Astaris doesn't believe Justy can stand up, he's lost way too much blood. But not only is he standing, Justy's slowly walking forward. Astaris' knees knock in fear.
Justy catches Astaris' wrist and asks if she hates him. Darn straight she does, he killed her father.

Astaris flares up, and Bolba is tossed away, but this time Justy is braced for her attack. He mocks her as "weak", making her attack at full strength again, and tiring herself out. As Astaris passes out, Justy is grateful that defense doesn't take a lot of energy, and she was too inexperienced to husband her power. Then Justy takes a nap of his own.

The lady is Jelna Flarestar, Justy's adoptive sister. If you think you're detecting a creepy psuedo-incest subtext here, you're wrong. It's text.
Astaris wakes up in her own regenerator, and Jelna is there to hand her a container of soup. It's Jelna's grandmother's recipe. Astaris gulps down the delicious broth, and is ready for more.

My imagination fills in a couple of holes here and imagines that Magnum broke jail when he learned his wife was dead because he feared that his beloved daughter would be abandoned to the "mercies" of a government orphanage and he'd never be able to see her again. No doubt Doon's Planet was only a stopover in a journey to a faraway place where a man could raise his kid in peace without anyone knowing about their past. But, well, things didn't work out that way.
Back to the actual story; Jelna assures Astaris that her brother wouldn't lie. This confuses the naive girl, who can't understand why such a nice lady would have such a horrible brother.
Alarms go off as armed guards rush down the infirmary corridor. Justy wakes and struggles out of bed and into the corridor. Passing nurses inform him that Vega's daughter is holding Justy's sister hostage down in C Wing.
Down in C Wing, Astaris holds off the guards, and demands that Justy be delivered to her.

Justy invites Astaris to follow him to where they can fight, and teleports away. (Oh, did I mention that Justy can teleport interstellar distances? Because he can.) Astaris follows using her own teleportation. Jelna worries about both of them, while the guards pass the buck to their commander.
Astaris rematerializes in the vacuum of interstellar space.

He's brought both of them to Doon's Planet, to the very spot Justy killed her father on. Astaris explodes the ground, but Justy's no longer there. She switches to psychic spears, but Justy is able to dodge or parry all of them. It's awfully frustrating.

Justy apologizes for what he was forced to do. When he struck, he killed both a dangerous criminal and a gentle father. Astaris is overcome by emotion and bursts into tears. For now, her vengeance is spent, leaving a lonely little girl. Then Justy reflects that he doesn't actually believe in God, but just in case, spare Justy having to do this again, thanks in advance.
He turns Astaris over to Jelna, who he hopes can restore hope and joy to the overgrown child.
Some time later, Justy is rushing off on a distress call when Jelna and Astaris come to see him off. Astaris is feeling shy and can't quite look at her new brother.

And the last panel is just a reaction shot of the three main characters.

As I mentioned last time, this is a bit of a rarity. The miniseries was never reprinted or collected in a paperback, and I'm not even sure Viz still has the rights. The mini sold relatively poorly (Viz blamed everything but the poor presentation) and since the remainder of the manga involved a long continuous plot arc and psuedo-incest (Justy calls Jelna "big sister" while having sex with her), Viz chose not to continue publication.
I do have the remainder of the mini, if there's a strong interest I might post some more.

Date: 2010-06-30 02:35 am (UTC)What's weirder is that the FIVE YEARS OLD 'sister' presented here gets all jealous and has fits over this.
Was this the series that also had the Blue Witch? Justy had a knack for attracting all the wrong women, so very much.

Date: 2010-06-30 03:07 am (UTC)I rather liked this, but I admit to having a bit of confusion with this when 'Irresponsible Captain Tylor' came along.
Always wondered if Justy Ueki Tylor was named in honor of this Justy.
