The sh!t just hit the fan. Escalation on the cosmic front.

The Guardians make a beachhead onto the Cancerverse, Thanos gets his act together and grows more powerful. Cancerverse Captain Marvel gets most of the 'anomalies' together, beings who are either from a different time or different space and do not belong in the present.

And the Abstracts and Cosmics of the Universe get involved.

What does Galactus from a Cancerverse look like?
Something out of H.R. Geiger.

Hardly room I shouldn't think.

The Comsic order in the MU is

The Living Tribunal
The "Big Four" - Eternity, Infinity, Oblivion and Death
The the likes of Galactus, the Celestials and the Abstracts (including the likes of Order and Chaos, Love and Hate)
The Elders

Thanos is somewhere in there, depending on power levels and whether he has the Infinity Gauntlet, but Phoenix would perhaps be less than an Abstract, and is currently going through a phase of limiting it's power by attaching itself to humans, so perhaps couldn't make it.

There was a thread about this over on CBR the other day, and Phoenix does indeed rank with Galactus. At least Phoenix can hold its own in a fight with Galactus.

The phoenix is more multi-versal, not tied to any one universe as much as this lot.

IIRC the whole point of the Phoenix was that is WAS unique to 616, which is why Excalibur never ran across a Phoenix analogue in any of the worlds which were part of "The Cross Time Caper"

There's only one unique Phoenix, which is the reason for that, but it exists across multiple universe, with the main part generally being in 616, but there has been hosts of parts of it in other worlds (the EXiles have bumped into Phoenix too).

What If's in Marvel are generally consider legitimate alternate universes. Phoenix has featured in several of them.

of course that plot point was very stupid, because Rachel was a TIME TRAVELER. Some of those realities they traveled to were pretty unlikely to have a Days of Future past.

It's been ages since I borrowed my friend's Excalibur collection, but wasn't it more the case that it was Rachel who was unique - being as she was from the future - rather than the Phoenix Force?

They never ran into a Rachel OR a Phoenix analogue, and since Rachel was the one with the Phoenix force they were more or less synonymous.

Plus, the Phoenix is basically life incarnate (At least that's how it was last I heard), so bringing her to a fight with a universe of life gone rampant might be counter productive.

Heh heh, "It's a lion." I remember how people would seriously argue that they said that, because "It's alive!" supposedly "wouldn't make sense."

Also I can't help but find the Galactus Engine more silly than scary. Maybe it's because of the angle that the head is at. Makes it look like a giant, evil Pez dispenser.

Okay, that's just effed up.

So, I've been eyeing the War of Kings trades and...I'm a little confused. I liked the previous cosmic events, in that I could go Volume 1, Volume 2, etc. But this...yeah, I really don't know. For one, I have to be familiar with X-Men crap, which I haven't read (even though I'm a huge fan of Brubaker, it flies in the face of my loathing of X-Men). And the volumes themselves are in any kind of sequential order, so....any help?

You should be ok just buying the main War of Kings trade. Some of the tie ins kind of weave into the main storyline and have characters show up in it (Darkhawk and some of the Guardians) but I'm pretty sure you can read it and understand it without those.

As for the X-Men, I didn't have any more than a nodding acquaintance with the characters in it and I was fine. You should be ok just reading the main mini in trade.

Well, there's two trades, by the looks of it. The first seems to be some tie-ins and mini-series leading up to the main event, much like, say, the first volumes of either Annhiliation or Conquest. Seems to include the Darkhawk mini and such. Worth a look?

And thanks. To be honest, since I'm a Brubaker fanboy, I've been tempted to try his X-Men stuff. Heard it wasn't....great.

That and the Cancerverse avengers having their run-in with big T.
