Why do comic fans get stereotyped so much?

A friend linked me to this yesterday, and I just had to share. Written and drawn by some guy who works in a comic book shop, Our Valued Customers is a webstrip in which he quotes actual things he's heard his customers say.

Yeah, I'm not really seeing anything horrifying or funny about the fanfiction one. Like, so what?

It's possibly the least insane of them all but to be fair it's kinda weird to tell a random comic shop owner about your sex Firefly fic that possibly has a Mary Sue self insert in it.

For some reason, I totally assumed slash. (Mal/Jayne seems probable. Jayne/Simon also likely.)

I'm guessing that one may be a matter of what she sounded like when she was saying it. A sufficiently bright and chirpy tone could make it sound a tad weird - it'd be like a Girl Scout saying it. 'Cookies for sale! And porn! And did I mention cookies?'

Yeah, they only have them every other year, and the GGs don't really come 'round my neighborhood that I've been around for (pity, they'd probably do pretty well here), but I used to work in an office down the street from their HQ back east.

Ah. No wonder, then. The only cookies I tend to have are the homemade kind - which, to be fair, are pretty damn good.

No, they're vanilla cookies coated in caramel, sprinkled with toasted coconut and laced with chocolate stripes. (AKA Caramel DeLites)

I'm inclined to file it with telling people anything about your hobbies - if it contains the word 'erotic', consider if you're really on good enough terms to be talking about that, especially with someone who's being paid to be polite to you.
