Matthew the Raven (known before as Matthew Cable) and The Corinthian 2 (known after as Alex Corinth)

The friendship which started off in Sandman, The Kindly Ones.

Feel the love there?

SPOILERS AHOY for events after Sandman.

Okay, so I can't explain everything, but I'll be showing you some key moments in their odd friendship and pair. (forced upon them by Dream, Dream again, and Lucien at one point)

I have to admit I read too much into their friendship, but it touched me all the same ;)

Scans taken from The Dreaming #18, #19, #38, #42 and #43

With the many things going on concerning our favorite nightmare, Matthew is assigned to be the Corinthian's babysitter. That goes well, obviously.

Corinthian snark! Just when Matthew was being nice :(

They're basically looking for someone here, though I can't reveal why or who.

They eventually find that someone, in a bar, in a bathroom, which leads to this conversation:

Heheh.

Anyways, the 'girl' Echo and the guy she's with have been giving the people of the Dreaming crap for some time, so things don't go well for her either.

But fortunately, Matthew steps in as the Jiminy Cricket to the knife killer.

Aw.

And after a few grapples with some more crap, we find Corinthian brooding.

FRIENDSHIP!

Anyways, following that, some bad stuff happens involving Echo, and the Corinthian gets angry. Obviously, who else could face him but

And he GETS him more than anyone.

On that note, MAJOR MAJOR SPOILER FROM HERE.

DON'T SAY I DIDN'T WARN YOU.

SPOILER.

Anyway, this goes up to one of the biggest moments in the Dreaming series.

One last heart to heart, a very emotional one, you see.

And in the end....

I have neither the time nor the consciousness to explain this all in detail, but what I thought would be a little mention in the Sandman series evolved into something quite nice in the spinoffs. Sad sad, although to be fair, Matthew died like four times already.

Still, this really moved me.

No tags for either of them, sadly o:

"He's a reincarnated serial killer. His partner's a bird. They're cops."

I'd never considered the fact that the Dreaming series could actually be good! This was incredibly touching and the art was better than some issues of Gaiman's Sandman.

If I were you, I'd just jump right in with the first volume of his Sandman run, but as you might imagine, I'm a little biased...

It is worthwhile to keep in mind that the tone of the first volume isn't the same as the rest of the series. The first volume is very much a horror/fantasy/superhero story. As Gaiman found his footing, the horror elements began to lose their prominence and the superhero stuff disappeared entirely. The story became more about the mythology of the world and the protagonist's relationship with his family and his role in the universe.

It's really good! 8D

Wow. Didn't know Matthew died.

I always wanted to see Abby pop up in Sandman. A shame it never happened.

I always thought Tim Robbins would be a great choice to play the Corinthian. He's probably too old now, though.

Also, between this and Secret Wars II, there may be a TV Tropes page in the future about supernatural characters in human form learning how to use the head.

Be careful what you wish for.

I did not like the Dreaming series. Because Matthew was briefly returned to life and human form. Abby is summoned as his wife/widow, and he has a tantrum, behaving EXACTLY like the shit he'd turned into at the end of his first human life. It was like none of the subsequent time ever happened.

The only bit I liked was the Corinthian dreaming about Real Life, and finding it troubling.

I really love the first arc with Corin and Matt in The Dreaming, but I can't read it much past that. I can't buy the "testosterone-pumping jerkwad" characterization of Corinthian 2.0, especially once there's no one directly messing with his mind. Obviously we don't see a lot of him in Kindly Ones, but he always came across to me as polite, predatory, fiercely loyal, with a quirky/morbid sense of humor, and I feel like most of that was lost.

...mostly I just wanted him and Matt to run off and open and detective agency together :P.

Hey, it would have spared them being in The Dreaming :Pb. And fair. I'm hardly the expert, since I literally skimmed the last 20 issues rather than read them, but the whole ending of that series was just one big clusterfuck as far as I can remember _o_.
