thebigapricot: three batgirls (batgirls)
[personal profile] thebigapricot posting in [community profile] scans_daily

Today is the sixth round of voting for the most memorable moments for females in DC history. And today's list has something for everyone! As a reminder, this is not the entire list of moments. There have been and are other polls. The scans here are not today's selection. There are 13 more at the link! Also I have slots open for 3 more memorable moments. So if anyone has anything they haven't mentioned that is very memorable (Max Lord neck snapping is on the list) let me know!
To see the list and vote go here.

And for legality, two of today's moments:

Chuck Dixon and Butch Guice launch a ship in Birds of Prey #21

Oh god, that Dinah/Babs panel. It's so painfully obvious the creators wanted them together at that point, there's literally no other explanation for it. That's a pair of lovers cuddling right there, no two ways about it.

I guess the DCU just wasn't ready back then for strong, independent lesbian characters who can kick ass. Or they didn't want their established characters tainted by "the gay". Whatever.

Well, they've pretty much sailed that 'ship out for everyone to see, the only thing they need to do is fly the flag that makes it official.

I mean, to have Dinah actually admit to being "almost jealous" of Jim Gordon because he can always make Babs smile? To have her mention Babs right alongside Ollie when she has goodbyes to say? Yeah, it might not be rubber stamped by the DC editors, but it's definitely there.

Plus, they do make each other happy (platonic or otherwise), which is more than either Dick Grayson or Ollie Queen could do for them.

well... except for the "artist used porn as a reference shot" argument.

(I don't know who the artist is, so this may very well be off base.)

Amusingly enough, Land did do a lot of early Birds stories, and there are a scattered few Dinah shots where you can see the beginning of his porn-tracing habits.

However, this panel itself is Butch Guice, who - while IMO sometimes lacking in a proper sense of gesture - is a solid, skilled artist who to my knowledge has never been observed to trace anything for a comic, particularly not from porn mags.

Considering it was Chuck Dixon who wrote this, no, I don't think he meant to imply anything romantic.

maybe not romantic

But clearly sexual. Conservatives writers who have a problem with the former tend to have no problem at all with the latter...so long as it's the wimmin' folk.

I can't deny that it look sexual. I can say I doubt very much that Dixon intended it to be so, even unconsciously. I spent enough time on his boards to know that he favored the Dick/Babs relationship (even once having Canary finding Dick in Babs shower.)

What Guice intended, well, you have to ask him.

But, in that scene, didn't Dinah barge into the shower expecting Babs to be in there?

Yes. Dixon's obliviousness to his own love story is kind of the best part. (Okay the perfect awesome rightness of Babs/Dinah is the best part. But that's a close second.)

Exactly. I can totally buy that Dixon didn't intend any romantic subtext, but that in no way undermines the presence of said obviousness.

Just getting back from the Booster Gold thread, I have to say:
Babs and Dinah are the same as Ted and Booster. A deep romantic friendships, but I don't think it is the least bit sexual.

well according to gail there was a line she was going to have to Dinah a while back that stated Dinah saying she was like... 10% lesbian/into girls/bi

hmm hope she can work that in again. it would make things interesting

Which I always laugh at, because Dinah strikes me as a Kinsey 2 at best, maybe a 1 with Babs as her sole exception, while Babs pings as the dykiest dyke that ever dyked. Dinah's just too openly, cheerfully boy-crazy for her to be subtle about being girl-crazy, if she is. Meanwhile Babs tried to pick up Helena in a bar in Italy once.

But hey, as long as she keeps dropping those gorgeous Babs/Dinah hints I don't care if she thinks they've both got the libidos and sexual preferences of bumblebees.

Bruce looks way too happy with Diana's foot there. Is there something you're not telling us, Bats?

While I once believed that Dinah/Barbara and Booster/Beetle were once just cases of powerful hetero-bro/sismance, as time grows on i'm beliving that these people are coming to grips with the fact they actually love this other person, if they couldn't accept that into their sexuality before. Admittedly Booster is coming to grips with the fact he's gay for beetle (and not necessarily anyone else) post mortem, making it more of a tragedy. I think over time Dinah has realized she loves Babs, though I think Babs is more oblivious to it, only coming up when she's jealous (Bab's dislike of Ollie, for example, when they first got married)

Have you got Selina working with Bruce as a team, and even jumping into water -- despite that being the last thing she wanted to do -- in Batman, Inc.?

I would also add Mia Dearden leaving her abusive pimp/ex-boyfriend (with a very nasty injury, I might add) and deciding to take Ollie's advice, which was checking out the Star City Youth Home.

Whaaa the finals definitely need Mia! D: At the very least the moment where she's learned of her HIV status and declares to Ollie she's becoming a hero whether he has a say in it or not.

At least one Mia moment... c'mon don't make me cry...

While I'm pretty sure most people on here are going to go with #2 - woo, I'm gonna have to go with the first one. I mean, how often does Batman just... give up like that? That is a powerful, powerful symbol of Diana's badassery. (That is, unless he was just playing for time or something.)

Meaning... what? He went on to sucker-punch her, or what?

He tried to invoke the same protection oath that was compelling Diana to protect a killer, on pain of Fury-related agonizing death. A girl had killed her sister's pimps and Bruce wound up chasing her all the way to Diana's embassy when she invoked an ancient Greek protection rite.

There was an SD post about it some time back, if I recall.

From: [personal profile] psychopathicus_rex
He invoked it for himself? Why? He'd already surrendered; Diana wasn't going to keep attacking him.

His idea appeared to be "if she accepts the oath, she can't attack me anymore, at which point I revoke my own surrender and go after the girl again and she can't stop me."

Which just goes to show his total noncomprehension of what the oath is actually about. Because the tradeoff for "oath-taker's protection" is "oath-giver's obedience"; had Diana accepted Bruce's oath, she could immediately have ordered him to leave Danny alone, and at that point, if he failed to obey her, the Furies would eat him. Obviously being the nonbeliever he is, it makes sense that he wouldn't really consider that an obstacle, but at the very least it should occur to him that if he breaks the terms she's free to as well and they're just right back where they started.

Ohhhhh-hh. Bruce, you crafty devil. (Also, a rare modern example of him putting into use a very clever plan that doesn't WORK.)
