cyberghostface: (Spidey & MJ)
[personal profile] cyberghostface posting in [community profile] scans_daily

For those that are interested, this is a continuation of a story from Stan Lee's newspaper strips. Check out the tags for the preceding parts.

This is the big conclusion to the tragic romance of Aunt May and the Mole Man. Stan's still writing an epilogue (it takes him longer to finish stories than Bendis) which I will hopefully post in a week or so but this is the big finish.

So when we last left off, Spidey was trying to stall his aunt from marrying the Mole Man by pointing out he didn't have a minister. But it turns out Moley had that covered.

That's actually rather beautiful, and a hell of a lot more of a classic Stan Lee Spider-Man story than anything the main comics have churned out in a long while.

I have many lulz for the Minister suddenly diagnosing Spelunker's Lung, but overall this is really sweet and touching and respectful of the characters, wow.

Huh. So this is where the real Spider-Man went. He's much more fun than the clone running around in his main title.

Maybe this Peter is the one in the Avengers, not the one going out with Mephisto Carlie.

Fuck yeah, Stan's still got it! How come a man who was already old when some of the current writers were born can write more poignant stories in NEWSPAPER STRIP FORMAT than Marvel's current "Brain Trust" can in full comic book format?

I wouldn't want him back on the main Spider-Man titles (that sort of thing tends to end badly), but I wouldn't mind Marvel giving him his own series to play with, maybe it would wash away the rancid taste of BND!Spidey.

Come on, Stan! They erased May's memory in mainstream comics, but you can finally come clean! Have May find out about Peter!

Wonder if it has to do with his partner? Larry Lieber is related to him, right?

Am I the only one seeing her asking Spider-Man to give her away and the comments of how she'd be proud of him as her nephew are her subtely implying that she knows he's Peter?

No. You're not the only one. The question is, how long can Stan stretch out the inevitable storyline leading to the reveal that she does know?

I don't know if we need one. I like the Commissioner Gorden-like knowledge of the hero's identity.

It actually seems kind of like May knows here but isn't saying it out loud.

For a newspaper strip, there's a surprising amount of subtext here.

This is...really, really good.

Stan's still got it.

Are these strips available as a collection anywhere?

I know I'm far from the only person to be saying this, but - why can't mainstream Spidey be like this? What happened to the FUN, man? This is fun! It's fun AND moving! It's fuving!
Dammit, I'm sick of being dicked around with by overhyped grit-sagas. I want my fun back. Is that too much to ask?
(Also, if I ever find myself the owner of a large and clumsy pet of some sort, I am totally going to call it 'Gorgongantua'. Is there a better name for such a creature?)

Awww. Wouldn't the most convenient thing be for Mole Man to make a tunnel into the Parker house so that they can both live there? I know, back to status quo and all but I want to see them together. Awwwwwww.

I dunno - 'Gorgongantua' just rolls so lightly off the tongue.
Also - 'Krakenwacken'? Where'd that one come from? I mean, I know what a Kraken is, but...

I will spread The Man's good word!

The weekly meetings would not begin with a quiet "now let us pray"

It would begin with a Acolyte leaping on the Stan's Soapbox and shouting, "Greetings True Believers!"

Reponse: "EXCELSIOR!"

Then everyone would ponder the mysteries of The Lee, The Kirby and The Ditko. Then they would compare pull-lists and then the trivia contest to see who gets that week's Holy No-Prize.

So wait - I get to read these in the newspaper basically for free, and yet I am refusing to pay for "real" Spidey comics because they lack fun?

Can I order this at my LCS, then? Because this is pretty darned good stuff. Sigh.

Ah - yes, that makes sense. The other two are dog references, so I was wondering whether 'wacken' also referred to dogs somehow, or whether it was just a rhyme.
