(Sonic) Antoine and Bunnie are Awesome
Feb. 9th, 2011 05:54 amFor a long time I've been wanting to do an Archie Sonic update, and I've finally gotten around to it!
The theme of this post is character development and a stirling example of how to do marriage in an action comic right!
Where we start out, Tails has embarked on his latest adventure and with him are Antoine, the famously cowardly French-accented Freedom Fighter, and Bunnie the Southern Cyborg with him, and I'll be following their story because who cares about Tails? I kid, I kid, he's fun and has his own plotline going through these issues! It's just the other two are really entertaining and steal a lot of the show.
Antoine and Bunnie have recently gotten married, Bunnie taking his last name of D'Coolette because, seriously, her last name was 'Rabbot.' D'Coolette is a big step up. Tails volunteered to bring them along to his secret island hideaway-base for their honeymoon.

Pffhehe :)
Ah, he'll learn someday.
Things may seem nice between them, but trouble may be brewing in paradise under the surface...

And by that, I mean 'they talk it out like, y'know, actual adults who trust each other' :) Though they are being spied upon, which is a concern.
Later the mysterious interlopers do show themselves and attack the pair, setting fire to the jungle and surrounding them. They fight the attackers off back to back...

... but are eventually overwhelmed and captured.
They're taken to the fortress of the Battle Bird Armada and thrown in prison cells.

Clever :) This is just a reminder, Antoine was once one of the most useless of the Freedom Fighters. He's a notorious coward and braggart, who's often nervous about going into any kind of battle. I mention this because it's really easy to forget when watching how awesome he's being.
Meanwhile, Bunnie's had a bit of a lucky break. Due to her cybernetics she's been mistaken for one of Robotnic's Dark Egg Legion, who the Battle Bird Armada are allied with. Seeing her chance, she starts smooth-talking the enemy commander while Antoine works on his escape and convinces him she's a deep-cover agent in the Freedom Fighters.

Ooh, she's good.
Back to Antoine, he's out of his cell, but has the bad luck of running into Speedy, the Armada's top fighter.

Running time!

Aaand trapped time, with a classic Antoine line there at the start. Fortress for *birds*, remember, Ant?

*Gasp!* The secrets out of the bag! Bunnie, how could you?! He trusted you, and you're an enemy agent all along??
Ant knows when the gig is up. With their marriage revealed to be a sham, there's really no reason to go on, and jumps out of the tower door.

The rest of the story is all about Tails' consoling Bunnie about the loss of her husband.

Is that a smile I see?

Did I mention she's good at this? She used to just hit things, she's gotten good at this.
Antoine, who's really alive, later comes back and they fight their way through the fortress until he meets up with his double agent of a wife.

Who says you can't do a fun loving married couple in comics? These two are great! I'm hoping Archie springs for some more issues of "Bunnies' and Antoines' awesome adventures."
And, later, one fun moment as they escape the fortress...

A 'little' kiss when the kid's not looking ^^
So, Antoine, once-French joke, now badass, cool, yet still possessing the character traits he had back in the day, just matured and more steady thanks to his experiences. That, friends, is character development done right.
Then on Bunnie's side, B's needed less development from her position as a powerful cyborg and a strong character to start, but she gets to show what she's learned hanging around a clever-type like Ant and becoming quite an effective spy in the process, a position far removed from her role as team brick.
Combined, you have a pairing that complements both characters at the same time and lets them both branch out and somehow make both of them even cooler. That, friends, is comic marriage done right.
Finally, a parting shot:

Hmph indeed :)

Date: 2011-02-12 04:04 pm (UTC)IMO, Sonic's got pretty much everything people love about Powergirl, Blue Beetle, Batgirl, etc. Humor, drama, fighting, romance, but it's all still a little lighthearted at it's core.
They just get turned off because it's not a 'real hero' book; it's got furries in it; and it's SONIC, he's so 90'S.
PFFFFFT, I say. PFFFFFT.

Date: 2011-02-12 03:59 pm (UTC)A book doesn't get to hit 20 years old without having SOMETHING going for it. Right now, Ian Flynn is a major something.

Date: 2011-02-09 05:42 pm (UTC)-I always had a soft spot for Antoine... he was actually starting to improve towards the end of the cartoon, and the comic just took it and ran with it utterly.-
Yea, he was one of the ones with the most room for improvement. And now he's just hot XD

Date: 2011-02-10 08:05 am (UTC)Lesse... most stories don't *focus* on Bun/Ant, but they do have roles in most of the recent arc. Like in the Iron Kingdom arc (which started in 201, though their role started a few issues later), they had to deal with a baddie who could seize control of bionics, and they were also two of the main defenders of the Kingdom while Sonic had to go gather allies (around 208).

Date: 2011-02-10 02:34 am (UTC)And I love how the captions kept introducing Antoine as "Bunnie's Husband." That made me grin.

It's, like, in it's best run ever since Flynn started at '160.

Date: 2011-02-12 03:41 pm (UTC)1) *Gasp!* I MISSED ONE. D8
2) Honeymoon story, EEEE! The featuring of Bunny/Ant is appropriate, since it's Valentine's Day weekend.
I don't care if this is a book for pre-teens and such; I'm 26 and I LOVE THIS BOOK.
(I need to get a dreamwidth account, so I can join/help you in the Sonic Scans. perhaps I can scan some of the older moments of the book's history...or maybe some of the Knuckles series.)

You totally should :)
