Ah Metropolis. At this time during the Reign of the Supermen we saw four Supermen appear and defend it. The Parasites have returned to face its protector(s) again. Thankfully we have...oh damn, it's that Metropolis Kid protecting us. Yeah, we're gonna need backup there.

The story this issue opens up with Loose Cannon at a STAR Labs facility going through tests with them so they can corroborate about the Parasites effect on people and the activation of their metagenes, which Loose Cannon attests to. One of the Scientists named Orrie hears this and makes a call to his Uncle Harry.

Meanwhile in Metropolis Gemir, Glonth, Pritor and Angon have found a new place in Metropolis to call their own a place in Suicide Slums that they appropriate. They're setting it up as a fake dinner area to lure hundreds of people at once to feed on.

We then head to the Metropolis Kid at a nearby hospital recovering from a missile he stopped bare handed. Perhaps in one of its earliest mentions we also get a funny scene of a nurse trying to give him a shot after he wakes up only to find out he's invulnerable. The nurse of course is confused, she already put an IV on him without trouble. Thus a good example of how he has to be awake at this time in his life to have his invulnerability. For an invulnerable kid he takes having an IV in him fairly well.

The Metropolis Kid's "manager" Rex Leech shows up trying to buy his way into exclusive rights over the killings. The Kid of course says no since that'd just be jeopardizing lives and isn't something they should be trying to make money off of.

And so we meet Harry and Donna Carol (DC) Force. A group who are all family members and Canada's superhero group.

The two hear a woman scream, she's being mugged at knife point by a few guys and DC rushes to the rescue though she doesn't have any powers. She gets caught by the various muggers and are apparently going to kill her. And then Harry catches up in his superpowered large werewolfish looking form. Yep, he can basically become a werewolf at command. Or perhaps a fox? It's kinda bearish too.

I have to admit it's hilarious seeing a group going "Oh yeah, those'll give ya powers" and looking for said things. Though admittedly even I have to say it's pretty dumb wanting to get bit by a monster so you can get superpowers, which is DC's hope with coming to Metropolis.

The Parasites setting up their feast for the public has taken a bit too much attention.

Ms. Raynes confused as to how their can be food when she hasn't smelled any follows Gemir who reveals his true self and begins to attack her. Thankfully Harry and DC are nearby.

Y'know, part of me feels her look was based off of Kitty Pryde for some reason...She's also got that go get 'em attitude.

After seeing Gemir DC says she's changed her mind about getting bitten and Yanes who's saved runs to call the police.

The Metropolis Kid battles Angon and seems to be having an easy time beating her until he lands.

The Police and Paramedics show up. Maggie and her group heads toward where the battles moved and the Paramedics charge a few defibrillators to shock DC's heart back.

Dan Turpin: Maggie- Ain't anyone else noticed there's a buck-naked man here?

Thankfully he won't have to. Donna shows up in her new transformed look. "I'm here to help you, Superman!"

"And I'll take him out!" And so the Metropolis Kid and Pritor get taken out of the equation as they battle.

Donna however comes upon a difficult problem. What'll she call herself?

Never is a good time for the super folk to flirt is there?

I do love how Maggie just stops mid thought when she realizes how dumb it sounds to read the Parasites their rights.

The Parasites flee from the area and because of it they damage the building on the way out. Our little Superman holds the roof up as the others get out to safety but he doesn't see DC exit the building and gets worried.

Yep, Donna seems to have finally chosen her codename, Sparx.

The press is interviewing the Kid over his "victory" and of course brings up the hot mysterious meta babe he met who he'd like to get a call from.

And so we see a bit more of the mysterious Taker the Parasites are helping feed that plays a big part in the series' end.

Sparx is one of the New Bloods who got around the DCU more than the others. She was a main character in the later Superboy and the Ravers series and has had cameo appearances here and there. She also had a quick appearance in Final Crisis surprisingly getting attacked but not KILLED in a major event book.

The only Bloodline I ever originally read, this is one of the first comics I ever picked up too (and well before I *really* got into them), and I still kinda like it.

Maybe more-so, there's some fun in a family who knows they have the metagene and who has to worry about kids power-seeking :) The bear-uncle's pretty cool.

If I'm remembering right she was still around (what used to be) Coast City when this would've been happening.

Metropolis Boy?
Also, the uncle, sweet as he is, is very susceptible to so many bear jokes.

I sometimes forget that anything non-sucky came out of Bloodlines that wasn't Hitman.

The ones on his face. I know what you were thinking.

The resemblance to Kitty might just be a result of Grummett being, most of the time, a Byrne clone - though, apart from some panels here and there, these pages aren't a great example of that.

I have always enjoyed Grummett's pencils (especially as he steered away from copying Byrne's style)...but the inking here is not exactly right for him. Who inked Grummett most of the time?

Sparx is fun, and I love the idea of a family where EVERY member has a dominant metagene, just needing a trigger event.

I like the shot of Maggie telling Kon that he's not her type; ironically, the Kon of this era would be pretty easy to Rule 63-ize.

Maggie Sawyer just rules. What's that you say? The '90s sucked? Why was that again? All those silly grim and gritty trappings? But they're so easy to brush aside! ....in Metropolis, that is. Because the citizens of Metropolis make all bad things better, especially when you've been reading too much Marvel. Metropolis is anti-616!New York.

(longtime lurker, new member, btw :D) Nice to meet you all.

I always liked this one - esp the Werebear Uncle Harry.

Does the Force family show up in much else apart from Sparx? I can't remember much DC stuff dealing with Canada and/or Canada's superheroes.
