I enjoy Avenger's Academy, but at the same time it makes me mad because it reminds me of two other teen groups that the Avengers neglect all the freaking time.
To be fair to Young Avengers are ridiculously strong and independent now. They have a great leader and really branched on their own, The AA is also run by a select group of the avengers, those that have something in common with the dangers of superpowers.
This is cute, but is definitely one of those things that is just picking at a basic hole in comicbook logic that shouldn't be looked at too closely or it just falls apart and genre convention insists it isn't. Now Spider-Man NOT doing this just makes him look like an idiot from here on out.
That's Striker, electrokinetic jerk well-versed in the ways of fame and money grubbing.
If it helps, the preview all but promises Electro handing his ass to him at control of electricity (dude's really got a handle on his powers these days..)
He can't, at least for the Avengers. He complains about this in New Avengers vol. 2 #7, when Hand comes around with (unexpected) paycheques.
Spider-man: Um, I didn't get one.
Hand: Yes, well, the problem is you're the onlyone at the table who hasn't come forth with your identity. And the government can't pay you your salary without knowing your real identity... Taxes and employment forms and such...
Spider-man: Yeah, yeah. Well, that is just typical me.
Hand refuses then Wolverine's suggestion of paying him cash-in-hand.
Would this then be a case of Strawman Has A Point? Seriously, all these years of superheroing and he's never approached Reed Richards or Tony Stark or any number of business savvy heroes he knows to help him at least put a patent on his web fluid?
I think Peter did try to sell his web formula to a chemical company, but the executive he pitched it to didn't see any use for a liquid that can turn steel-hard for only an hour. Yeah, that guy was an idiot. One wonders why Peter didn't try again with another company for start his own.
Spider-Man: *follows the suggestions* Everyone: *sues the company for all its assets* Spider-Man: Huh, well, at least they can't come after me personally. I'm no worse off that before. Some teenager with a computer: Oh wow, I traced these shell companies back to...Peter Parker!
I feel so weird that I've actually come to love the Academy kids. They're essentially what you'd get in a classroom most of the time. Some nice kids, bad kids (gah Finesse), arrogant kids etc... and of course they're all liable to snap at some point.
I've followed them since the beginning, they're definitely dynamic and well-characterized. I may want to bash their heads in when they do something stupid, but the flaws are part of their charm.
I really don't like shit like this where they call attention to writer/editor enforced gaps in logic that constrain the character. Either correct the situation, or, since we know you're not actually ever going to do that, shut the fuck up about it and get on with the story instead of wasting precious panels justifying your own nonsensical status quo by making Spider-Man out to be an idiot.
Yes, now...how many of you here have your OWN monthly title? I'm sorry, SOLO? I'm sorry, should have said titleS. That's plural, kids. Oh, and how many decades has your title run? How many movies and TV series have you had?
Yeah, I THOUGHT so. Sit down and shut up and let Spidey do his thing. If you're lucky, I might put in a good word for you at the Electric Company.
