Seven from Batman: Confidential 22
Recently I got the trade to this story, which covers the first trial that the Joker underwent for his crimes and the creation of the precedent for all the supercriminal trials that would follow.
Overall I thought that the story was interesting, not as good as Chuck Dixon's Devil's Advocate, in which the new DA finds a loophole to break out of the Joker's constant insanity pleas and secure him the death penalty for once, but still fairly good if a bit wonky in terms of art.
So, I decided to present an abridged version of the story here, or at least the trial section in the beginning, to see what people thought.
The story kicks off with two detectives talking about a mysterious crazy person who had been going on a killing spree across the city. One of the detectives is kind of distracted, as he's just gotten back on the job from his honeymoon. They hear a crash, which they run to investigate.
It turns out that it's Batman, and he's got the Joker in handcuffs. Batman tells him that the man is the Joker and that they should be cautious around him, before swinging away, assuming that that would be the end of it.
BUT, since the story seems to be in a pocket universe were apparently supervillains, or at least ones like the Joker, don't exist prior to the Joker's arrest, the cops just go through the motions as they would would any other suspect.

The detectives shove the Joker into the holding cell, where the married cop says that the Joker's clown outfit and purple clothes were going to make him "popular" with the three massive bikers that were also in cell awaiting processing. Which is classy. *rolleyes*
Suprising all, the Joker actually does a slapstick routine where he pretends to beat himself up, which makes the bikers and a little guy arrested for money laundering burst out laughing, releaving the tension in the room.
Then... the Joker regurgitates a capsule that he'd swallowed, explaining that it was a "refill". He then procides to melt the money launderer's face off with his acidflower.

The Joker killing someone whilst on their watch makes the married cop snap, and he proceeds to start smacking the crap out of the Joker with a truncheon, which leads to him getting a verbal dressing down from his partner while the Joker gets his One Phonecall.

"...And the other to cut down Detective Shancole's wife!"
Cue Batman looking horrified that the Joker had managed to kill someone from across town while in a police station.
Next up: the Joker vs. DA Harvey Dent!
