Ultimate Venom: War of the Symbiotes, Part 2

So here it is. This post marks the conclusion to 'War of the Symbiotes' and the final story for Venom and co. for the time being.

(One more thing...does anyone have any good recommended image hosting sites that aren't Photobucket or Tinypic?)

When we last left off, Spider-Man was battling Venom only for the symbiote to abandon its host and latch onto Spidey.

Now Spider-Man is struggling to surpress the symbiote's urges to eat everything in sight while dodging attacks from the Silver Sable and Beetle. That's when the Ultimates show up.









Thor blasts Spider-Man/Venom with a huge lightning bolt.



Peter wakes up in his bed the next morning and receives a message from Nick Fury to come meet him. Fury (who is with Captain America and Iron Man) explain that they got everything under control, the "suit" is in their custody but Eddie Brock disappeared into the crowd.





Next issue, #127...

Three weeks ago, Curt Connors is pulled out of jail by S.H.I.E.L.D.
Two weeks ago...





At this point an explosion rocks the place. Norman Osborn has escaped (this event is taking place during an earlier issue; we are just seeing it from Gwen's perspective this time around).





Back to the present, Pete is with MJ when someone makes an appearance...







Finally, in #128...

With this part I had to cut out some important stuff, so i'll do my best to fill in the gaps. All the more reason to pick up the trade, though.



She manages to shift back into her normal face when Eddie knocks on the door asking for Peter. Aunt May does her best impersonation of Clint Eastwood from Gran Torino and pulls a gun on Eddie, telling him to get away from the house. It's a great May moment and I wish I could have posted it here.

Spider-Man attacks Eddie and brings him to a nearby building, and asks him why he is like this.











S.H.I.E.L.D. and Iron Man arrive, but the new Venom says he has what he wants and won't fight, before disappearing into the gutters.



Tony manages to convince Carol that since Gwen is now a normal girl she should be able to live a normal life, and that if anything happens, Peter will let them know.

The issue ends with Eddie once again on the bench, telling people his story before eating them. Unfortunately for him, one of them happens to the Beetle in civilian attire, who manages to capture Venom and take him away to Latveria for his master. (I would say it's Dr. Doom, but since Doom's head is paste now, I wonder how this plotline is going to be taken care of.)

A little bit of an epilogue #129, in which we see a little bit of Gwen adjusting to her new life.

In this situation? In a situations like this? Exactly like this? What I'd do - you would have people talking, right? Talking. And everyone would have their own voice. Different. Different voices, different styles, different - i dunno - just different voices. Different. And no one would sound like they'd read too much David Mamet. No one. Not one, not - here's the thing...

Yes I do. Every character that Bendis writes sounds like every other character that Bendis writes, and he writes in a very distinctive, affected, "natural" argot that is too influenced by David Mamet. Which is fine, for characters that he's created, but it sounds very odd when it's characters that have had a very different "voice" in other books. And yes, I know he created Ultimate Spiderman, and most of the cast, so he - almost - get's a pass for writing them in his own voice, but, for me, it's too affected, and it's too monotonous. A highly-educated, adult, multi-millionare shouldn't have the same speech pattern as a teenager from Queens. Or a high school principle from Queens, for that matter.

So...is it really Gwen because...yea..sounds more like Gwen clone..except she sticks around instead of just disappearing and never being heard from again.

The explanation is that Gwen was "absorbed" into Carnage leaving behind a husk, and then Venom "absorbed" Carnage, leaving a normal Gwen behind. It's a bit wonkier than someone straight up cloning her.

you know what? i TOTALLY LOVED Aunt May's "Home for Gifted Youngsters" I loved that essentially she did what Xavier couldn't... Aunt May is just THAT badass... :D

Looking at the solicits for 'new' Ultimate X-Men it's gonna have Kitty, Iceman and the Human Torch. No idea if the X-Men are now based out of the Parker home.

Tho honestly, that would be kinda cool....

All the talk about the new series makes it sound like the leftover X-kids are just gathering together and trying to stay alive. So they totally could be a group of homeless kids living out of the Parker residence.

Okay, really, how in the hell is it any parent's business about what happened to Gwen? She was previously considered dead, that error was fixed and she's trying to get back on with her life, mind your own business.

And I fucking love this version of May. Just her expression in that last panel on the final page is just pure gold.

Parents are irrational creatures and considering how freaked out some can be about the tiniest things, knowing that their child was two desks away from a monster who has come back to life after being dead would likely upset them.

I know that it's fuck all of their business and you know that it's fuck all of their business.

However, in the event of something going wrong, the school will be asked very serious questions about how they managed the risk of having an affront to God's Law in their class.

I kinda appreciate the principal actually having problems what with your district home to mutants, Spiderman and such. It makes sense, and at least he's not clueless. Sure I have no idea why he's suspicions spring to Spiderman suddenly in the last few panels, but at least he's not the usual dumb bystander.

Immonen is fantastic, isn't he? The expressions in the conversation between Peter and Stark, at the end, are excellent, and bring so much life to the scene.

Now that's a very cool ending for the Venom storyline.

This stuff is the Ultimate U at its best. Such a shame the other titles where not this good all the time.

I figure its only Ultimate Spider-Man keeping the whole lot from getting canned.
