I still get irritated by this to the core of my being by "Carlie".

the spider island story seems interesting, I AM however VERY annoyed that it seems like they are REALLY pushing Carlie in our faces.

Yeah, damn them for introducing a new love interest for Peter after breaking him up with Mary Jane. It should be Mary Jane or nobody and since it's not Mary Jane, he should die sad and lonely. Marvel is worse than Hitler for still using Carlie Cooper.

Personally, I tried to give Carlie a chance. I just don't like her, or the vast majority of the writing on this book since OMD. Hell, if they'd managed to give Peter a different love interest who struck me as interesting, I'd probably be less annoyed by the whole thing.

One thing Marvel's forgetting with almost all their current couples is that any relationship consists of both mutual interests and hard work. While Peter/MJ didn't appear to have much in common on the surface (as opposed to below the surface) they worked to keep their relation going.
With Peter/Carlie there's a lot of mutual interests but there's no work being put into it.

exactly, Peter and MJ worked not because they were so similar, but because they were so different. They LOVED what made them different, each offered something the other lacked. MJ grounded Peter even more so (i would argue) than Aunt May. I think JMS said it best (several times... damn wish i could find those issues/scans) they bring out the best in each other, MJ never made peter weaker, she made him stronger. They had to WORK at thier relationship... this... this is FAR too easy, and too "perfect" its sooo superficial Marvel HAS to be using this as a set up or cover up... other than the "Surface" Similarities, they have NO chemistry what so ever....

You do realize that the plot of Spider-Island is that everybody in Manhattan gains Spider-Man powers, right? And that in all likelihood this is just Peter's first exposure to this fact and not that she's the only other person to have the powers?

I actually like how Carlie's reacting here, for once she feels like a fully-realised character than just generic love interest, it's Peter's reaction that's bugging me.

I don't know why Marvel is under the ongoing impression that it's okay for this guy to act like a massive jerkwad just because he's supposed to be Peter Parker.

Actually, they show her quite a lot in her policework. They haven't done much else with her, but "Carlie Cooper, Crime Scene Investigator" is something they've been fairly up-front about showing.

I kind of hope Jackal's Tarantula's a progressively mutated Kaine!Tarantula (the latter was sprouting some segmented eyes), though he and the King're probably just there to look both similar and cool.

I saw this coming the minute they announced the new Young Allies book and showed that she was on the team.

Justice and Speedball are responsible adult Avengers who mentor the next generation. Firestar is a rookie who is still part of that next generation.

Huh, well considering the last time someone underwent biological changes as a result of Peter's intimate bodily fluids was when his radioactive sperm gave MJ cancer in that Dark Knight Returns ripoff/homage, I'd say that so far she's ahead of the game!

At least until she goes all Brundlefly, just to add to the vast tapestry of misery that is Peter's life.

One minute it's all happy superpowered fun, the next she's trying to eat kill and eat him after mating, and giving birth to dozens of babies that eat her as their first meal.

I'm okay with Crocs being worn sometimes to places other than the beach... but mostly just by, like, nurses who are on their feet for the better part of eight to ten hours, and others in a similar situation, not just as a general day-to-day shoe for people who are not on their feet like constantly or in a situation where their feet are likely to get wet like the beach. And, of course, if you work in a hospital or some such, there are often only certain versions that are allowable by dress code (the one pictured, with only a strap on the back, and holes in the top, not typically being one of them).

All righty, everyone remember these panels from the back-up in Amazing Spider-Man #654.1 and this years Free Comic Book Day issue of Amazing Spider-Man?



Now compare how Mary Jane is reacting to having spider powers to how Carlie is reacting to having spider powers?

Based upon how they're each reacting, I have a hunch that, by the time Spider-Island is over, Carlie, who is already thinking of all the great things she's going to do with them, will wind up losing her powers, but MJ, who no doubt will want to get rid of her powers ASAP, winds up being stuck with them. Because, as Tombstone from the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon said: "That is what we grown-ups call...irony!

I think that's reading a little much into it. At this point it just seems like the difference between somebody who is probably a little naive about such things getting superpowers and somebody who lived for years with the unluckiest superhero ever getting them. Carlie has probably never heard "with great powers comes great responsibility" and has definitely never seen just what Peter goes through because of his powers. Mary Jane has enough experience to know this is not necessarily a good thing.

Also Pete being all strict and responsible with Carlie here really reminds me of him and Mayday in MC2.

Oh hey. That'll be the real kicker. Mephisto took the soul of his future daughter and put her into Carlie knowing the two will meet and while Pete's not in love with her he'll think he is because she reminds him of himself.

Okay, gag. I could have been fine with Peter being in a relationship with someone who isn't MJ, if they'd actually done a decent job of it... and not made his new love interest shift appearance every few issues without being a mutant and having no discernible personality (or perhaps one that shifts as often as her appearance, but not necessarily at the same time). For example, if Peter and MJ had ended up divorced but still friends, and Peter dated Ms. Marvel, and the writing was good... I wouldn't be complaining. That being said, Carlie's reaction to suddenly having superpowers would probably have been pretty endearing if I hadn't already tried and failed miserably to like her as a character.

Also: my theory of Carlie's ever-changing hair being a series of well-designed wigs has apparently been blown out of the water, because I don't think most wigs would have held nearly that perfectly through those acrobatics, comparably modest though they may have been for the power-set.

I know! Carlie, honey, you're a crime scene investigator, not a hospital nurse. Lose the Crocs, they're not useful for your job, and they're frigging hideous (oh, look how matchy-matchy her Crocs and baby-doll cami are, so forcedly cute I think I may gag). (Please note: I am not intending to insult with my sarcasm, but I am tired and can't sleep and I have issues with Crocs or Uggs being worn as fashion and not for practicality, the issue being that they're unflattering - particularly once you've seen Uggs + leggings two sizes too small being worn as pants + tight excessive-cleavage-baring long sleeve tee + too small cami worn over not under tee and/or unzipped North Face vest instead of a jacket when there is freaking snow + Oompa Loompa or fried-into-leather tan and/or really crappy and streaky amateur-done blond hilights, then you can't abide by the things except for practical purposes because of the negative associations.)
