THE HUNTRESS #1
Written by PAUL LEVITZ
Art by MARCUS TO and JOHN DELL
Cover by GUILLEM MARCH
On sale OCTOBER 5 • 1 of 6, 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T
Look out! By the end of this hot new miniseries, the Huntress will have the largest price on her head in DC Universe history.
What will the Huntress do that warrants such a death mark? And who puts it there? The jaw-dropping events will be revealed as the Huntress heads home to Italy and embarks on a mission that defines her life. Don’t miss out, because this story will tie in to upcoming events in BIRDS OF PREY!

Paul Levitz has something of a history with the character, as he's credited with Joe Staton and Bob Layton for co-creating (in 1977) the Helena Wayne version of the Gotham City-based vigilante (daughter of the pre-Crisis Earth Two Batman and Catwoman). That version was killed during 1985's Crisis on Infinite Earths, her existence erased from the new post-Crisis unified timeline, and she was replaced with the similarly-looking Helena Bertinelli version, now the daughter of a Gotham crime boss.

Since this 2011 revamp Huntress has Italian roots, we're going to assume the DCnU version of the Huntress will likely remain Helena Bertinelli.

So THAT'S why Huntress isn't with the Birds of Prey in DCnU...

Also PAUL FREAKEN LEVITZ???!?! YES!!!! (Still waiting for that crossover between Helena Wayne!Huntress and Helena Bertinelli!Huntress...)

the whole costume is based off Cully Hamner's costume in his Detective Comics Back up

Hell, her whole upper body looks awkward. Probably because her ribcage is turned 90 degrees from her hips, but her head is positioned as if it weren't.

I can tell you from personal, painful experience that clothesline is defying the laws of physics.

The image should be inspiring, but all it wants me to do it yell out loud FAIL!

Oh! She's on a clothesline. I didn't notice that before. I like how the artist has included a tiny, lacy thong right there in the foreground.

Please share your personal experience. I think it will promote a sense of community or something.

Well, huh. She's not wearing the fail!costume.

Cool.

(Is that the first positive thing I've said about DCnU? I think it is. I should mark a calendar.)

Not only is she not wearing that failboat, she is completely covered below the neck! I too must break down and say something almost nice about this rebooty thing.

I suppose every great loss has some small gain or osmething. You know, to keep us reading this crap and so people can say "But they gave her pants! Why are you complaining now, silly wimmins?"

I'm glad that she's got on something close to Cully Hamner's version of her costume.

Considering that Hamner's part of the redesign crew, it makes a lot of sense that his design for her would be similar.

I like the sound of this, and I love the costume, but I cannot work out what's going on with her torso.

How foolish of me! That is definitely a super-accurate and utterly appropriate drawing of how a person looks doing Clothesline Yoga!

I mentioned above, I think the problem is that her head and hips are aligned (huge thighs and all), while her upper body is turned a full 90 degrees.

I'm not really certain if it's humanly possible.

I'm not crazy about the art, but it's not abominable. Also, while the Hamner costume is inferior to the nun costume, it's vastly superior to the the Lee costume. And the story sounds quite good. As I've said elsewhere, this the first thing to come out of the reboot that I'm genuinely eager for.

Actually, haven't DC already said that both Barbara and Helena are still going to be associated with the BoP in some capacity?

Birds of Prey is referenced in the solicit for The Huntress mini.

And Oracle will be in Birds of Prey. It was a last minute decision. If IIRC Gail didn't know about it until after they did it.

Gail doesn't know anything about the new BoP. They refused to tell her, the same way they neglected to tell her about King Shark and Deadshot in Suicide Squad.

Honestly, for all of DC's talk of "DIVERSITY" you only have one female creator, and they seem to be treating her like shit compared to all the other male (mostly white) creators.

Why are they 'neglecting' to tell her something about a book she isn't even doing anything with? If they don't want her to line up the dots in Secret Six to put KS and DS in the new Suicide Squad, they'll do it themselves.

Oracle being in BoP is something of an issue if 'Oracle' is still Barbara Gordon and Wendy isn't taking the role or whatever. But if it isn't, then again, it's not her issue.

Simone's clearly not the only one being messed around here when Morrison, for instance, was on record as saying that Batman Inc was 24 issues, and now he's suddenly saddled with a maxi-series wrapup to his story because of what the higher-ups want to do.

Because Gail herself has said that she's hurt they didn't tell her about King Shark and Deadshot. For a long time, they were HER characters, and she rescued King Shark from obscurity.
Fact is, Adam Glass likely wouldn't even have a Suicide Squad with King Shark and Deadshot if it wasn't for Gail's work on Secret Six. Suicide Squad is DC's sad attempt to replace Secret Six.

((Gail's not upset about BoP, but she is bothered that they didn't tell her about King Shark and Deadshot))

I think it would be a courtesy, because otherwise it seems like they are trying to keep her in the dark about the new universe she is helping create.

And I know about writers don't own them, they aren't their creations, blah blah blah, but it's all part of RESPECT for your writers. I'm kind of sick of the way the Big Two treat their writers and artists. Especially, because some of them have said that they don't like the way they are being treated.

As you've already said, they aren't her characters, and if she isn't using them post-Flashpoint, she doesn't need to know about them. And actually, Deadshot's been a part of the Suicide Squad since forever - And as much as I liked Secret Six, the book is basically Simone's Suicide Squad. That's why she got Ostrander to write a few issues with her. Secret Six might be the cult hit, but Suicide Squad's got a better rep, frankly.

And if the writers and the artists of the big two are that badly mistreated, they should leave. Most of them are big enough names that they could easily get a good deal doing a variety of indie books where they'd have total control.

As it is, they work for one of the Big Two, and they have to know that it's company rules, as far as they're concerned.

This is, of course, if we're still talking 'Barbara Gordon as Oracle'. Given Simone claims it's going to be respectfully done with regards for Barbara becoming Batgirl again, she might not also be Oracle. Simone just spent the better part of half a year dismantling Babs as Oracle, anyway.

Her gut is covered! No more spanky-pants! This is a vast improvement in her costume design. I don't even mind her mask, since it reminds me of the one she wore in the 90s.

I much prefer this new costume to the midriff-baring one she had previously. Much improved! I decline to comment on anything else, such as any violations of physics or anatomy that may or may not be in there. ;P
