Claremont also explicitly referenced "The Draco" monstrosity as canon a couple of times, while just about everyone else just looked politely in the other direction. Guess someone liked the Austen run...
When I was first getting into mainstream comics, Austen's Uncanny X-Men was one of the titles all on my pull-list for some reason. It was loud and brash and I was naive in thinking it was good comics. But it did the job, didn't it? It didn't sell poorly, and Marvel kept Austen on the book for... two line-wide relaunches, didn't they?
Reading it then, I thought it was awesome. A few weeks back I re-read The Draco. How could I have been so foolish?! The plotting was terrible, the pacing was off, and the big reveal... handled so poorly.
See, I could have been happy for Nightcrawler to be the son of an ancient mutant. I could have. But then... Azazel's the Devil (but he's not, we all know that). And after being banished by angel-mutants (WHAT) he kept going to Earth to breed teleporters so he could return to Earth (WHAT). I understand with hindsight that Azazel wanted to carry his army over, but NOWHERE in the arc does it state that.
That was the strange thing...most of Austen's ideas didn't sound bad when he would lay out the broad strokes on the forums. Hell, the Draco sounded like it was going to be a light-hearted, humorous arc, of all things (I'm sure the promise of Nightcrawler running around without pants had something to do with that impression). But the execution...arrrgh.
