Why should he even care? His other living kid is Daken, who he certainly doesn't seem to give a crap about. And he shouldn't, because one of rules of being Wolverine's offspring is being evil.
I think it's the five-stage process. He's still going through a form of Denial with Daken and Laura. "They're not mine! Okay they are, but not really...."
Sooner or later the denial will break. This might do it.
I think Wolvie has no obligation to take care of Laura as one of his own. The fact that he does still take care instead of Daken speaks more about his kind heart. After the shit that Daken has pulled, it is completely reasonable for Wolvie to disown him.
Since he kills pretty casually, I'm surprised you think Wolverine has a "kind heart." Are you sure you're not putting some leather pants on him there? ;)
One of the interesting things ABOUT Wolverine is that writers spent a lot of time humanizing him despite being a killer. His relationships with Mariko, Kitty, Kurt, and Jean all showed how he is something besides just Mr. Snicktity. He doesn't need to be kind all of the time, but other than "Kindness" how would you describe his relationship with Kitty?
You know, unlike some characters where they AREN'T humanized and fans just completely make up any characterization.
I've had this argument with whitesycamore before, and let's just say thinking Wolverine is kind despite being a casual killer is different from thinking he is oh-so-sexy and that somehow excuses the horrible things he's done.
