Taking over any title is never going to be easy.
Taking over a Dwayne McDuffie title, so soon after we lost him, that has to be a tough job,
I've always been a fan of Scott McDaniel since his Nightwing run, and hopefully he'll score another hit with the new "Static Shock" title.
Mr McDaniel has posted a video on his youtube channel, which showcases the progression of the are.
And for legality, the inked, uncoloured cover for Static Shock #1, from his website.

Date: 2011-08-26 05:26 am (UTC)I love Static. I really do; he's awesome as a character, and electro-magneto-kinesis is such a cool power set to consider in general. But it's even better when his tales are enhanced with the addition of Gear, his friend and sidekick, and a canoncially gay superhero to boot. I like comics with teams in them, as long as the primary core cast is kept to a manageable level and both the relationship between the characters and the writing itself is good; Batman and Robin, or Young Justice back in the day, for example, can be really fun in ways that a truly solo title has difficulty being, because there is only one superhero in say, a Batman or Superman solo, unless you have a special team-up issue. The interplay of two or three capes, perhaps a few more depending on the title, can really make for a dynamic that opens up greater possibilities in storytelling. It's part of why I liked Marvel Adventures: The Avengers so much, aside from the canonical Cap/IM potentially-dates (I ship them, so what?); there was a solid team dynamic that made for some fantastic plotlines. The Static cartoon was a favorite of my childhood, and I feel that adding Gear as Static's sidekick, or even just Richie as Virgil's Alfred earlier on, played a part in making the series even more fun, because the characters played off of one another in such a delightful way. It improves certain stories to have a supporting character who is "in the know", whether or not they are themselves in the crime-fighting business.
Jeez, I rambled, and I'm sure icon_uk still got the point across better.

I like Batman: The Brave and the Bold; I like Batman Inc.
*note: I don't really like "Batman," but just in keeping with the example given*

Date: 2011-08-25 09:09 pm (UTC)Just not my cup of tea at all, along with guys like Humberto Ramos and Chris Bachalo. I prefer more grounded, grittier realism to the cartoony, exaggerated stuff. Steve McNiven, Mike Perkins, Steve Epting, Lee Weeks, even Greg Land when he used to actually draw instead of photoshop porn (see the Nightwing & Huntress mini for a good example of his earlier stuff). That's the sort of stuff I like.

Date: 2011-08-27 10:14 pm (UTC)I have the Static Shock trade from the library (featuring John Paul Leon of the past and the present on art) but still don't understand what this trailer is even trying to tell me. So never mind what a "new" reader would think...
