IDW's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1

So while the big comic buzz last week was the beginning of DCNu, a certain well-known franchise got it's own fresh start. IDW launched the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 on Wednesday, and I feel it's my obligation as longtime TMNT fangirl to share.

Now, I while there are some spoilers behind the cut, none of them are super huge, so use personal discretion. One of the scans has a moment of physical abuse, so I'll put up a trigger warning to be extra careful...

Also, this is my first time posting an entry here, so I kindly ask you to be gentle let me know if I've broken a rule/missed something so I can fix it. ^^




We begin with a battle on the streets of New York; Splinter and the Turtles vs a cat mutant named Old Hob and his street gang. It goes pretty much the way you'd expect it would.




But as the fight finishes, you notice something is off...




Raphael isn't there.

Now we segue into a flashback, 18 months earlier, where we see the newest intern at StockGen Research being shown around. She's instantly enamored with four cute little turtles involved in special 'genetic regeneration' research. 3 months later, she's given the turtles all names.




Back in present day, Raph seems to be living on the streets on his own (Why? Dunno.). He's looking for food in dumpsters and garbage bins when he hears a fight going on in one of the buildings. Looking in the window, he sees a teenage(?) boy getting a beatdown, begging his dad to let him go.

"Dad?"




"Let me show you how much."

For those wondering, the artist team is Dan Duncan on art/Ronda Pattison on colors. No tags for them.

So it looks like the classic story is being shaken up, and several main characters/names appearing in the first issue (these aren't all of them). Being a member of the 'Rainbow Bandana' crew, it may take me a while to realize which turtle is which if the weapons aren't in the panel, but I'm sure I'll get the hang of it.

Overall, it's great to have some new TMNT to look forward to; after the 2k3 'toon ended, I was kinda distraught. Hopefully this and the new movie/cartoon coming in 2012 will begin another 25 glorious years of Heroes in a Half-Shell

Now if you'll excuse me, I'll be over here squealing happily. :D

Yes, definitely need to buy! I have to say, it's nice to be on the ground floor of a TMNT comic again. The last one I followed religiously from the start was Archie!TMNT, so I'm due.

Plus, I need to get that new Ultimate Collection set they've started of Original!TMNT. *drools*

I've never managed to follow a TMNT comic from the start.. I've barely managed it sideways! When my LCS was closing I got my hands on a fairly decent consecutive run of the Eastman b&w title where Shredder died, April wasn't real and Raph got huge and mutated? Also I think there were vampires and aliens.. but that was eight issues at most, and it only served to deepen my appetite. I have dribs and drabs of the original stuff, but yesssss Ultimate Collection nom nom nommm

Goofy cartoons and terrific-to-dodgy films can forge iron bonds with comic properties, I guess!

They used to have all of the original run online at Mirage's webstite but they were made to take it down when they sold the rights to Nickelodeon.

Yep, he's involved! He's doing the story/layouts while Tom Waltz scripts and the other artists do the final art.

I'm glad one of them is still working with the boys, even a little...

She acted her age through the whole show, and is just a clever and sneaky kid that helps instead of supersmart mary-sue that saves the day all by herself. Had to deal with some crazy shit herself, too. *hugs*

I actually like most major human characters from post-2000 Transformers stuff; meanwhile, the only human I really love pre-Animated is Raoul from G1, and we got 2 whole episodes with him in it... D

Agreed, which makes it's senseless cancellation all the more annoying. (I can also recommend "The Allspark Almanac 2" for more background information, including things like the names of the OTHER Omega Sentinels.

Can't bring myself to warm to the current batch from TF: Prime. Jack is tolerable, if dull, and Raf and Miko annoy the hell out of me for different reasons.

I still can't bring myself to choose between Beast Wars and TF:A for my own favorite, so they tie. Though if Animated had had a proper last season, that may have changed. I still need to get that Almanac, if only for all the background 'bot profiles in it...also, WHERE'S OUR SEASON 3 DVD? D<

Miko drove me nuts at first, but she's grown on me in her own way. Jack I find is the kind of teen who seems to have stepped up after his father died/left; responsible, but still has his moments of being juvenile. We've hardly seen much of Raf (grrr), so I withhold judgment until we know more about him.

But I love me some June Darby, Agent Fowler, and Silas. Adults acting responsible and competent! <3

So, is Casey Jones's dad (I'm assuming that's who the kid is) Frank Castle or the Sandman? That's who the character design reminds me of. (Unfortunately I've probably just poofed inito existence a future Marvel alternate universe comic where Frank Castle abused his family before becoming the Punisher.)

Huh. Funny, I saw the Norman Osborne hairline on Casey's dad, but didn't even click into the Sandman look.

Maybe Mr. Jones (I'm assuming it's Casey Jones too) and and Flint are brothers?...

Part of it is the shirt. Different colours of course, but horizontal striped t-shirt on a guy with lots of muscles, combined with a widow's peak hairline, reminds me of the Sandman.

Look similar but not exact; I'm kinda cool with that this time around.

The last one was Mirage's TMNT Vol 4 #31 last October, but it was only available for order on the turtle's website (same with #29 and #30 that year).

Last one actually on comic shelves...18 months or so? :/


EDIT: I lied, it's been at least 3 years since TMNT was actually on shelves. that's depressing. D:

First of all, welcome to the wonderful world of posting! It looks good as far as I can tell, so your fears can be put to rest.

Second of all, thank you for posting this! I had no idea the reboot was happening so soon, and as a TMNT fanboy, this is really exciting stuff! I can't wait to see where things go with this, and hope you'll continue to enlighten the community with future posts.

I actually forgot about the reboot until someone mentioned it on another forum the week before it came out (I blame it on DCNu, and the new Sailor Moon manga releases this month; too much new comicness to remember!). Thankfully my LCBS takes emails re: new pull titles.

I definitely plan to continue posting the title; S_D's made me spend so much money introduced me to so many excellent books here, it's time I returned the favor. ;D

Oda isn't human, I swear to God. How can one man come up with nearly 60 volumes of sheer brilliance, actually do a timeskip well, and still have another 50+ volumes of ideas yet to be written?! And as added bonus, he made my favorite character even more awesome by making him into MANsopp. <3

And not a new Sailor Moon series (God, I wish...), but a new printing of the original series, and Sailor V too! Sailor Moon #1 and Sailor V #1 comes out Sept 13th, and they'll be released every two months until at least March 2012.

Oda is, in fact, a beast with ink for blood, living only on comic paper and the light from the scanner used to send in his progress. And Usopp was always kind of a badass, in that in spite of his fear he managed to pull through for the crew. It pains me that One Piece isn't nearly as big here in the US as it oughta be, because goddamn...every time we have a Badass week in SD, at least one or two One Piece posts pop up (and rightfully so)!

Damn, that's what we need around here: a Courageous week! One where we spotlight characters doing great deeds in spite of the odds. Hope a mod sees this and decrees it to be so.

And you seriously had my head scratching until I saw "reprints." I immediately thought of my first girlfriend from high school, and how near-deaf anyone around her would be if there was a new series. It could be picked up from satellites in space; not because it would be that loud, but because her love for Sailor Moon makes an electromagnetic disturbance. Trufaks, yo.

That's exactly why I love Usopp so much; he's the most human of the group, but he still manages to stand alongside the others through everything...And don't get me started on the damage 4Kids did to One Piece here in America; I have to work in the morning. XP;

Oooh, a Courageous Week sounds like fun! I can think of a half-dozen moments right now...

Sailor Moon changed my life; I don't think I'd be the person I am without it. I KNOW I wouldn't be the fangirl I am without it. XD;; I'm still praying for the glorious day some wonderful anime company gets the rights to it again and puts out the WHOLE series, including Sailor Moon Stars. *dreams*

Well, he was alive and well 18 months ago, so that's promising. Then again, this was all before the turtles somehow leave the lab...Ah, who're we kidding? The minute we see him in present time, he'll already be maimed in some form.

Hopefully he won't be a sensory system in a jar though; I have to admit I felt bad for the bastard about halfway through 2k3.

I love it that TMNT always does things differently or close enough to their origins. I love even more Eastman is using someone else from the 80s tv series as the catalyst for Stockman using the goo on the turtles and that the Shredder is getting a nice good rest. So when we do see him at long last with the Foot. Oh yeeeeesss it shall be glorious.

I agree; it's like the origin is an apple, and they keep using an apple in a recipe. But they keep changing the kind every time they do it, changing the flavor/texture of the story every time...but it's still delicious. :D

What I wanna know is, will Shredder be a longtime player, ala 80's/2k3 toons, or a one/twotime villain similar to the original comic?

Me too. Y_Y It was pretty much TMNT perfection to me. Some of it at the end was kinda hokey (the Dragon transformations and stuff...eh) but overall I adored it. Where's the rest of my season DVD's 4Kids, huh?

I think this comic'll be a good one. I'm optimistic for the boy's future in 2012 as of now... :)

The art is quite nice IMO, rough but not too much so. I'd never heard of Dan Duncan before now, but his DevART page has some slick stuff. Color me excited. :D

Well, Splinter's actually around the lab too, and is also part of some 'reasearch' (I was saving his intro for my next post, after #1 no longer 'new'). One assumes he's cognizant enough to remember the name after 'the change'...or the turtles themselves will be.

I was thinking of posting this (I'm kinda of a posting rookie and was afraid I blotch it up...) I'm glad someone beat me to the punch, I loved this re-imagination of the classic formula. I was a rainbow bandana fan too, but for the comics, one color works so much better...it was an impressive debut. Hope it keeps going. I like IDW titles and was missing the gap "28 Days Later" left...
