ComicBookResources has the preview of #6, the penultimate chapter of Fear Itself.

2 behind the cut.

Thor is down after his fight with Hulk and the Thing (their Worthy incarnations).
Iron Man is working the forges of Odin.

The remaining Avengers attempt to rally and care for their own as the world watches, their every action scrutinized to inspire or turn to dread the hearts of the world.

Behold the Mighty. I don't think it's Valkyrie anymore who is one of the Mighty.

Is it weird to anyone else that Steve is calling everyone "gang?"

Nothing against the story of Fear Itself, but...

...Didn't Marvel promote this thing as topical and dealing with real-world problems? Have those themes actually been touched upon, or is it all Odin being a dick and Thor getting his butt kicked?

The overwhelming theme has been well... fear, and I guess that's indirectly topical?

As soon as they showed the Hawkeye one saying "Do you fear... modern weaponry?" I called bullshit. So you are correct, and I am not surprised.

Can't lie, I would love every page of a comic where Hawkeye was irrationally scared of guns. Perhaps Bobbi and Natasha could taunt him with a Glock. Or chase him with it. And he'd be all Steve Steve protect me with your shield.

I love it when they even just touch on the symbolism of superheroes, and how other people look to them. Sure, people can be dicks about it, like really, really, big assholes about it, but when the chips are down, they look to them for hope and inspiration. I wish that was explored more in normal comics.

Well if it weren't for all these frakkin "events" there would be time to explore that in normal comics....

Didn't they just have, hmmm.... A Heroic Age where they could've effectively explored the impact of these heroes during a peaceful time?

Whoops, wait, here come the MechaNazis and Secret Norse Baddies you've never heard of to fuck shit up once again and irrevocably change the Marvel Universe yet a-fucking-gain. Please wait the better part of a year until this thing of no consequence and waste of paper is over.

Is it just me, or does Fear Itself count as the worst Marvel event in a long time?

They're just fortunate that Stuart Immonen is drawing it.

I think that's still Secret Invasion. This is just boring and overlong.

Sevret Invasion at least had a strong lead in and an interesting and clear premise (who can you trust). Fear Itself doesn't even have that going for it. I might be about to get of the Avenger-led 616 Marvel titles when Fear Itself finishes, unless they do something really interesting.

Ahh, but is it worse than Civil War?

This one might be more of an ass pull, but at least everyone's on the same page as to what happens. No "Let's REFUSE to write out the nature of the thing making this event happen", no writers working against each other like they were, etc.

Of course, I suppose 5 years DOES count as a long time...

I guess it all depends on how you qualify success. Civil War was a financial windfall for Marvel. Secret Invasion wasn't a disappointment, but sold far less. Fear Itself has sold terribly (though not as bad as Flashpoint, which was abysmal by the standards of big comics 'events).

On the merits of story? [shrug] I dunno. Civil War had one, even if I thought it was terrible. Secret Invasion was one issue of story in an 8 issue series. Fear Itself certainly sold a big story...but it's only slightly more involved than Secret Invasion. One can only watch New York City get destroyed Michael Bay style (but to return as if nothing changed a month later) before it gets kind of rote.

I actually liked Flashpoint, but this is music to my ears. Hopefully, Marvel and DC will try a year or two without a big mega-event and see how they fare.

Of course, it's probably more likely that they just take the diminishing sales as a sign that comics are DOOOOOOMED!!! instead of a sign that they need to try producing a better product.

Well, DC's said flat out that there won't be any big events for the next few years, because they want to develop their new on-goings.

Marvel, on the other hand, has already hinted at their next event.

Secret Invasion gave us Mike Carey writing an X-Men mini. Fear Itself has no Carey. Carey wisely took off for outer space this time.

It's just kind of weird, because it's not obvious to the casual reader what fear has to do with giving some of your best-known tank characters melee weapons.

Was Dark Reign a long time ago? Because I still remember Norman Osborn showing up in every book to strut around bloviating the same "This is what I'm telling you..." speech and antagonizing the titular heroes and having his Nth angry breakdown in front of witnesses.

I kind of like the basic setup of Fear Itself, though I think it's dragging on too long, with too much muddling of purpose in the tangential books and too much awful Matt Fraction dialogue in the main book. (Silver lining: stretching a 3- or 4-issue story out over 7 issues means lots more pretty, pretty Stuart Immonen artwork to look at...)

It hasn't helped that it feels as if the main story is happening in books besides the main mini. Because of that, everything that's happened in the main title feels unimportant.

It's long and boring, but I wouldn't call it the worst. It doesn't make me hate the characters like Civil War did, for example.

Partly..

Well the dialogue was certainly the worst. Which given how overated I find Bendis to be there, really says a lot for the depths that I think Fraction has sunk to.

He really can't get a grasp on Thor's voice, both in Fear Itself, and more worryingly in his Thor title as well. (Or the Silver Surfer's for that matter too..)

Also not a fan of the shield breaking moment for Cap, or Bucky Cap's exit.

It's a shame, because I really liked the artwork. But the storytelling has some serious issues. And is just another scathing indictment of how useless Marvel editors are these days, at reigning in their 'star' writers.

Hell, I'll Say It...

Man this Event is such a pile of Out of Character action.

Spiderman calling it quits because it's the end of the world and he needs to be with his loved ones.

Cap letting him go and explaining "because we're going to lose" as the reason why.

I think Spidey choosing to die with his loved ones could have worked if we got any sense at all that this really is the fight they can't win, but Fraction hasn't sold me on that at all and as a result poor Peter just looks like a putz.

This is the same Cap who told Thanos wielding the Infinity Gauntlet that he wouldn't be victorious as long as one person stood against him? And when their last-ditch plan to stop him failed, tried to punch him in the face?

I'm sorry, I just don't want to buy what Matt Fraction is selling.

Totally, of ALL the characters to be defeatest- CAPTAIN I PUNCH NAZI'S AMERICA? Captain 'I fight Kang the Conquerer in Single Combat', Captain 'I tell the rest of the united states, shield, and tony stark "no YOU move" America?

And Spiderman! Spider - i'm gonna lift this several thousand pound concrete pillar thats crushing me to death - man? Spider - NO ONE ELSE DIES - man?

Even if they HAD shown this to be some kind of Apocolyptic 'we're all going to die we have no chance' fight, these are the two characters who would be throwing down till the end.

On the upside, Speedball over in Homefront has been saying "fuck that" to surrender and pretty much been soloing it like a boss in a city that hates him.
