Part of my brain knows it's wrong, but the other part is going "Ooh, pretty." (And then the other part is going "WHO CARES, IT'S OLLIE; YOU DON'T LIKE HIM, REMEMBER?")
So, I'm genuinely wondering if their apparently ploy to win over the Smallville audience over to comics is actually working. I mean, that's clearly what they're doing here, right?
I can't see any other reason. I read this thing, and however much you dress it up with pretty Perez art, you still have a very mediocre thing left when you take Ollie's charm away.
Honesty? I like this book. Loved the action, the pacing, and story. Not to mention the new toy Ollie has to play with. I'm a GA fan, always will be. But more than that I'm a bigger Roy Harper fan and almost everything in this book screamed Roy Harper.
1. He looks exactly like Roy.
2. He has secret agent esque adventures, which is Roy's style.
3. Uses a weapon other than bow and Arrow like Roy.
Plus just the overall vibe. Of course being a company man is Ollie's thing. Having a team that feeds him info via wireless communication, eh more fit for Roy in my opinion but I can see Ollie using it too.
Plus another thing..while he looks like Roy in his own book...in Justice League International he looks like Connor! So..really is there an artist who can draw Ollie to look like fucking Ollie?!
P.S. - As much as I really hope Lian, Connor, and Mia make a return, I do hope Galahad and The Queen make a return as well. Queen was a great villain and it's a shame to lose her.
I hope Galahad makes a return becausse a gent whose crazy and may or may not infact be the reincarnation of an 8th century knight of the round table is just a great character.
See people are saying they don't like Ollie here and I feel the exact opposite. He seems like an actual damn hero, someone who wants to help people, not a cavorting philanderer.
I get that the Erol Flynn thing is part of his charm and I do like to see a guy enjoying his work and I hope he does have that part to his personality, but a reset of the Ollie whose this constant sanctimonious asshole who cheats on his wife every other issue? yes PLOX.
You know, I'm sure there's a story here, and there's characters doing things to move it along, but the only thing I can register is, "Where is your beard? Where is your beard? WHERE IS YOUR GODDAMNED BEARD?"
There are exactly two superheroes I can literally not envision without a beard, and Green Arrow is one of them.
Maybe I need to read more of the issue, but I have no clue who that guy running around in the Green suit is. I mean sure people are calling him Ollie and he uses a bow, but I am not feeling any of the fun or swashbuckling I associate with the character. I mean the only other thing Ollie has going for him is old man snark and even that is gone.
That was exactly my reaction. They simply ended Ollie, and there's this very generic and not very engaging generic dickhead in his place.
I'm not like a regular Ollie fan, but I do like him, and I wonder what more active fans of Ollie think. I mean, Ollie is kind of a dick, but not in this manner. This guy seems to be all about...you know what? Having read JL 1, I think I'm seeing a pattern here. DC's heroes now seem to be about "my dick is bigger than yours."
There's a disturbing 90s Image/Heroes Reborn vibe to the #1s I've seen from DC so far. That's not helped by the prominent presence of much of the personnel. I nominate this and HAWK & DOVE as being the first casualties of the relaunch. That's my prediction.
Hmm. So, they basically got Tony Stark, dyed his hair blonde, and have him running around with a bow and arrow and the standard Batman gadgets?
On the nose, it isn't a BAD direction to take Ollie in, but I think they need to give some more dimension to Ollie's character in order to make it work--because right now, he kinda looks like Generic Hero #70175.
This was my impression as well... The vibe from this book was that they took the first Iron Man movie and essentially stole a large chunk of the plot. He REALLY felt like Tony to me.
OH... heh sorry... the stealing the plot from Iron Man really doesn't show in these images. I will elaborate if you ask..
It does seem though that the Flashpoint stuff was in fact a trial balloon. This is the same guy, only with balls. That seem to be choking him, but balls.
I think we're supposed to assume that every character's treatment in NuDC is based on what Barry Allen thought of them, as he's the one that basically remade the universe.

Date: 2011-09-09 10:05 am (UTC)Frankly I don't see the appeal of making Ollie so goddamn young. That's like making Captain Haddock young. You don't do that.
Plus my usual problem with Dan Jurgens' characters, that makes them look oddly unsympathetic to me.
