Static is interrogating a super-criminal about who he's working for. Before the man can answer, he's suddenly silenced forever by shots fired from nowhere.
After school, Static pays a visit to his new secret headquarters, provided by the superhero Hardware.
Though the part he notes as making it impossible is with all the air currents around the buildings and such; it's not a predictable shot in a calm field or even dealing with wind coming from just one direction.
Rereading that, you're right; the currents around tall buildings would make that kind of shot a nightmare. I guess I was too busy laughing my ass off with the words "half a mile" and "Impossible"
It was rated T, it seems like it could appeal to kids. But it still showed a man get killed with blood. And if this is going back to statics roots his books dealt with drugs, homo sexual issues, sex. I do not know the limit you have for your kids but I hope this helps.
I recall the issue where Virgil's dad gives him "the talk" not just on how to have sex, but how a man treats the woman he is wanting to have sex with, as being rather wonderful and perhaps the best handling of the topic I've seen in a comic.
I really enjoyed this, I am a long time static fan and I am glad to see the cool reborn. I will miss gear, but its good virgil has someone watching his back and bounicing starwars jokes off of him. This is static done right, and I am glad that his time with the teen titans is being ignored.
It was awful, and I hope this book gives him the respect he is due(titans screwed blue beetle as well). Also that red hood chick sure has been in a lot of books this month.
This looks awesome. A teenage superhero who fights crime with science - while having a sense of humor and generally acting like a very positive example of a relatively normal teenager? May need to see about getting a copy sometime soon.
These pages bring back the feel of the early Static stories, and McDaniel's style fits well.
Interesting way to address stereotypes of young urban black men in America, though. "Everyone's looking at me like I'm a criminal." "Well, that's because I told them that you are a criminal."
Of course, there are strong narrative reasons to make life more difficult for a superpowered protagonist, but I hope Rozum, McDaniel, and their colleagues come back to dig deeper into that "cover story."
I totally just wrote what you just said about McDaniel.
Also, until reading this comment and looking at the credits, I had no idea that McDaniel was writing this. Can't remember him writing anything before this.
I've never read Static in anything before this, my only knowledge of the character comes from the cartoon, but if I remember correctly, DC wanted to make the characters in the comics more identifiable with their most recognisable incarnations. So is it just me who expected this to be more like the cartoon Static? I had to look up who Hardware was because I'd never heard of him before. Would it have been so difficult to include Gear in some way?
I did like this issue though, it's got me interested enough to check out the next few issues, especially after that last page.
