Inside Out

Following up on turtlefu's earlier post, there seems to be a surprising number of scenes in comics that involve a character exploding out from inside another character. Here's another one from Punisher volume 7, #5. It happens to be my favorite of this grotesque little mini-genre mostly because I like cheesy action films filled with one-liners.

I'm not a big fan of Rick Remender's Punisher run, which occurred during Dark Reign. It involved Frank Castle trying to assassinate Norman Osborn, and eventually led to him getting killed by Daken. The idea of Frank gunning for Norman is a decent one, but Frank fails to account for the Sentry, which seems very out of character. As a result, he winds up on the run, and eventually died because of poor planning.

On the bright side, Remender's run did incorporate Frank into the Marvel Universe a bit, having him use technology from other heroes...like Hank Pym's shrinking technology.

What really separates this one from the others is that he doesn't burst out of anyone until they are already dead.

He chokes the first guy from inside him traveling via pizza. Then shoots the second guy in the mouth from the first guy's mouth. Then and only then does he burst out of the first guy to threaten the third one with the bad one liner.

I wish I could find it . . . there was a Defenders story, maybe an annual, from the 80s, back when I was a young lad and my dad had over a thousand some comics from that era.

There was an instance of Cloud smuggling itself around hidden in someone's lungs.

When Cloud "burst" out of its hidey-hole, there wasn't a big, gory mess! Of course, Cloud can shift to near-incorporeal gaseous form, anyway, so there shouldn't have been much more than a sore throat afterwards.

I mostly remember it because of the interesting discussion from the letters pages a few issues later, about the plausibility of whether Cloud could have even used such a tactic . . .

I just started giggling at the notion of tiny Frank running like mad to get onto the correct slice before it 'takes off' from the rest of the pie.

It does seem like a suitably Martin Gardner solution

Eventually someone would eat the slice he was sitting on.

Eh, Punisher gets a pass for me. Albeit this is one of the more creatives ways he killed someone and curious how he got his hands on the tech.

I only half-remember but I think he ran into a tech-head former minon who had hoarded a lot of super-gear.

I could be wrong.

I'm actually not that big of a fan of Frank in the MU, because one day he'll get ahold of the Ultimate Nullifier.

Also, the pizza delivery twist on this was already done in Millar's Authority, and that was more than enough for me.
