Nightwing #1 - First pages and the red-eye explained

Found these over on tumblr, I suspect they might be from a preview copy, since they do appear to be scanned rather than released graphic images.

We've seen a couple of these pages unlettered

I like that Dick's confident about things again (even if calling himself "flawless", whilst possibly accurate from any number of angles seems a little presumptive) and especially that the red eyes are not his standard look!

Thanks for posting these pages. It's good to see Dick back to his Nightwing identity.

Some people may see it as a downgrade from Batman, but I don't. Nightwing was all about moving out of Batman's shadow and becoming his own man, so really it is just him being himself again. Plus if being Batman made him more confident and self assured then ever, then that is good too.

Maybe I should change my icon to red?

My one concern will be how they handle the transition back. Dick taking on the Nightwing role again is fine, but giving up his role as Damian's mentor... that will have to be impressively well handled and so far Morrison has been not been good at writing Dick for them (Damian yes, Dick no)

And the red... still not his colour.

kind of what I was thinking. Then I realized that for about the first 43 or 44 years of his existence he wore a red shirt so bright it made jokes about him being a distraction for criminals so they didn't shoot Batman fairly common

Yes, as noted before, aside from some age shifts, the Bat titles are pretty much unaffected by the relaunch, so all of Morrison's run is extant.

Night vision lenses....

It should be noted that Dick's used such lenses many times before (Cyborg made them for him) but the default colour for them was green.

One implication I'm liking- he went back because he wanted to. I.e. Bruce'd have been fine with him staying as Batman as well.

I'm not sure if it's the case, but I hope so.

Yes, well... This is exactly the main problem I have with Dick. Not necessarily that he himself is always presumptuous, but that his writers often seem to be.

I don't really know that much about him as a character, because every time I've sought out material with a focus on him in there's been an undercurrent of "oh boy, this guy's the awesomest! I'm so glad you've joined us on another Nightwing Adventure, Nightwing Fan! Let me tell you about how oh-so amazing Dick is (but of course you know that already) using a number of clichéd narrative shorthands!" and since I'm naturally contrarian and tend to read against the text anyway, it really turns me off.

It's too much - like a Cillit Bang advert. If I'm going to grow to like a character I need a bit of breathing room. Where do I start, Icon? How do I learn to love dick? Surely you should know!

This book looks promising, especially if Dick is taking all that he learned from being Batman and using it to improve his crime-fighting methods. :)

Also, unpopular opinion, but I'm really liking the red and black costume a bit more than the black and blue one he originally had. :3

You know, I dislike the reboot. I think a lot of the great books we've been getting could have easily fitten into the DCU we were familliar with. That said, I understand the reasoning, even if the argumentation falls a little flat for me.
That said, it feels a little counterintuitive to the whole accessability spiel to just note: "Oh yeah, Dick Grayson was Batman for a year, it was totally awesome, and you missed it.

If you look closely the design for his boots and gloves are similar, it's actually his wrist/forearm that he's pressing.

Less stoic, more heroic

I've never really liked it when they wrote Bruce as being a stoic and paranoid vigilante. To me Batman was always on his guard and didn't make many jokes but he was always more focused on saving people than punishing the wicked.

Basically what I'm saying is that I like how Dick's seen that the psycho's killed a couple of people but he doesn't snap and start beating him half to death, nor does he make light of the situation. He's not really being stoic but he's taking the gravity of what's happened seriously. I find too often in comics you'll have people who forget how to have a good time or you have people who quip like Spider-Man but they're not doing it as a coping mechanism, they're doing it because they don't take the danger seriously.

I've felt that as he *was* such a good super-hero as a kid, his experience should add up to a lot more than had been portrayed before- which is why I liked him as Batman. In many elements writers made him regress- now the reboot has a bit age-wise (which I think will make him if not fully dependant on Bruce, as a 21 one year old they'll be more chances to show a father/son relationship than when he was reputedly 25ish). So I'm happy to read this here.

Agreed, that was my (oft-repeated) major issue with Chuck Dixon's Nightwing run, for all that Dixon liked the character (and not in the seemingly destructive way that certain subsequent writers did) he did very little with him to distinguish him from Batman, giving him a crime-ridden city to watch over (Like Batman) and an exceptionally poor set of recurring villains to test himself against. A guy who has faced down Dr Light, held his own for longer than any non-meta in hand-to-hand with Deathstroke, fought the Fearsome Five and the Brotherhood of Evil and has personally thrown explosives at Trigon should not be fazed by the likes of Brutale, Lady Vic and Shrike.

Other than that his role seemed to be to be the fall guy for any team-ups involving Batman to show the new villain de jour was badass by beaing able to defeat him before being taken down by Batdad.

Isolating him in a city just made him come across as a watered down Batman, when he's something else.

This is the reason I like the Peter J Tomasi run, as it showcased what makes Dick different from Bruce. He IS intense, but not to the extent Batman is. He IS sociable and he can call in favours from just about any hero going and DOES when it makes sense to.

I'm going have to agree with those who've posted before me = I liked the blue outfit better. The blue wasn't really used with other Gotham based heroes and IMHO made Nightwing stand out. And since Nightwing has had his own fairly successful career, his blue outfit has become about as iconic for him as Batman's or Robin's.

Okay.. I can actually imagine liking this new look for Nightwing (despite how evil or Renegade it looks)...
But any chance of making the color blue again? I mean, this looks like how Jason Todd would dress up as stand-in Nightwing...
(yeah.. I know..he did it, but didn't change the costume originally..)
