He's the fighting robot, Megaman!


I realized while there's been an occasional post about some of the series we never really opened with the first issue's story proper so here 6 1/3 pages from this issue (as 1 page was already posted in a previous preview post).

Our story opens in a sorta of flashforward to Mega Man already up and fighting and then the rest of the issue essentially explains how it all began. 

Esteemed scientists Dr. Albert Wily and Dr Thomas Light are both speaking. It's right before the day Dr. Light will unveil their joint undertaking in new robotics. It's explained that Dr. Wily isn't going to be speaking to the press at the unveiling since he's had a history of ethical violations with robotics despite the fact he had an equal share in designing and constructing their prjoects. Also of note are Dr. Light's two lab assistant robots who are essentially his kids: Rock and Roll.



Now just what is Dr. Light revealing?



But interestingly even Dr. Light's past is not so clean as one might think.    



Yes those two are Rock and Roll there. 

Later at home after the unveiling Rock and Roll ask about why he was so bothered by the reporters question. 



Cue an interesting morning as the Light's realize the Robot Masters have been taken. 

 

And of course Wily shows up on screen demanding a surrender from the leaders of the world and to be recognized as the world's greatest scientist. Guess he couldn't wait to be one of the two most famous, eh?

But with Wily revealed as the bad guy, he can be easily found and stopped right?



I actually love how crackily comics that reaction is. HOW COULD I FORESEE MY ESSENTIALLY UNSTOPPABLE ROBOTS BEING STOLEN AND USED FOR BATTLE?!? It's up there with how Dr. Erksine in the Captain America mythos never thought to write the formula out a second time for safekeeping. 

And so cue Rock volunteering to go stop the Robot Masters. 

Upgrading his battery power, giving him armor and a copy chip that would allow him to copy abilities from the Masters and finally a Megabuster we see a new hero born.

Dr. Light: I built you Rock, after my love for music. You are something very different now. 
Rock: You said my arm-cannon is the "Megabuster," right?

 

And yes I'd ljust like to go ahead and say since it's start I've loved every minute of this comic book. It's been my favorite read and I don't think it's letting up in that regard anytime soon.

Wait, does this mean that if Dr. Light had different music tastes it would be Reggae Man?

I think there should be a whole team of them. Reggae Man, Jazz Man ("lift me, won't you lift me"), Classical Man, Pop Man, Metal Man, Ska Man....so many possibilities!

Wily did later build a robot crow named Reggae, so I guess we know who was the Bob Marley fan.

Yeah, this whole origin sequence kind of illustrates how dumb Light was in trusting Dr. Wily.

I MEAN LOOK AT HIM! last panel of the first page he may as well be wearing a big neon sign that says "I AM EVIL YOU DUMB FUCKS."

At least Dr. Light is looking the other way when Wily is making his evil face. In the previous panel, Wily was making his evil face while shaking Doctor Light's hand, and Light doesn't even notice.

I can completely see Wily doing that. He's old school that way.

To be fair, I think they meant it to be short for "Gepetto", since he was supposed to turn Megaman into real boy (Like what happened to Pinnochio.)

I kind of hope for a crossover between this series and the Brazilian one, which is fucking incredible in how bad it is.

"Princess. AKA "Mary Sue". Like every other female in the book, she's drawn totally different from issue to issue. She's a character created by a "mad writer" to "kill all the characters and take over the comic". Literally. Yes, that was his plan. The writer, José Roberto, was going to write Princess killing the entire Megaman cast and taking over the comic; turning it into Roberto's own original work. The editor, Sérgio Peixoto Silva, found out and fired Roberto after issue 5. In issue 7, Princess herself would be blasted out of the comic. Of course, by then, Roberto had made all sorts of odd changes to our favorite franchise."

This is quite possibly the most amusing thing I have ever read in regards to behind the scenes comic drama.

Oh LORDY that series was horrible. Yes, turn a nice guy like X into a gross lech and make Roll into a constantly-naked fanservice girl. SUCH AN EXCELLENT PLAN.
