One intriguing notion from Superboy #1

I don't intend to post more than this from this issue, which set up some intruiging ideas.



Not sure about the art, the colouring gives everyone a very plastic-y look to their skin, but other than that, I like seeing slightly scrawny looking Superboy again. (Buff Kon was pretty, but a little obvious)

After escaping the clutches of N.O.W.H.E.R.E. Superboy relocates to Kansas and explains his situation to a very familiar (to us) classmate...



N.O.W.H.E.R.E. are still running tests on Superboy (I'll say no more than that), and the results of this one perplex the team...



Now THIS I love. I've found Kon's angsting about being Lex's offspring to be annoying as hell because A) being evil isn't genetic and B) All he worries about is the evil, he never considers the GOOD points of of Lex... like his intellect.

This has Superboy (no name has been given for him in this issue, it took me a while to notice that) displaying a simple binary SUPERMAN-GOOD/EVIL-LEX-EVIL but some of the traits that lead us to consider Lex as evil. If this side of him can be explored I'll be fascinated.

Also, possibly the best nutshell description of Lex Luthor I've read in YEARS... provided it IS Lex of course! ;)

Pretty much, though there's more to it than that. I really don't want to spoil it for folk who haven;t read it yet, and it did only come out today.

Okay, so I guess Superboy isn't reacting to the cries for help because he's a clone, or hasn't been socialized to internalize morality, or some such.

What's the girl's excuse? Not that she'd rescue anybody, but no call to 911, not even a reaction to a burning building and cries for help?

heh actually, she works for N.O.W.H.E.R.E. (not a spolier to anyone who has read the solicits) so she probably knows about the test. If she reacted "OH MY GOD SAVE HER" then he would be acting because of her, not because of an internal sense of right and wrong

Or more likely because half his nature IS cloned from a pathological, megalomaniacal, narcissist, to whom the cries of a woman in a burning house mean bugger all unless they impacted him directly.

And there IS a reason the girl doesn't do anything....

I'd "fail" that test too. I'd just turn to the building and yell, "Lady! You have bushes beneath you! Just jump! That's actually a safer option than me endangering myself running through your burning house!"

Soranik Natu is kinda an example? Though they do shove 'SHE IS THE DAUGHTER OF SINESTRO' in about every other issue she's in. And, like many adopted children in media, her adoptive parents are completely ignored in favor of genetics.

The scene shown here is out of context and all is not as it seems. Rose shown here is... uh... "undercover"? Yeah, let's call it that. Rose shows up later in the issue and acts completely different. I don't want to give too much away, but the short answer is, yes, she's working with them to test him.

First cartoon Superboy is a emotionless angsty emo with some Daddy issues and have a slight crush on Ms. Martian, no the reboot version of himself dosen't bat an eye at a woman whose house is on fire and given the fact that their a tricycle in her yard, there are kids involved! I know the kid had short attention when their were girls with bikinis in the room, but DAMN!

Really? Rose Wilson? They're REALLY retelling characters from OTHER BOOKS (Rose was Bart's possible girlfriend, remember! And Fairchild just shove Serling off the sidelines) instead of reintroducing Superboy's previous cast? Not even Lori from the last book?

I will admit, I am bias to this book, as I read the 90s series instead just reading what Johns worte about him in Teen Titans, but consider how much they change from the other 90s Super-Titles, like how Matrix was retcon and Linda's return was underwhelming...

Hey. Rose was the Titans' resident bad girl, which in comics-language means she was the resident femme fatale. She had no shortage of flirtations while she was there: Eddie, Bart, that one time with Tim, that one time with Jason Todd, Cassie, M'gann. Admittedly the one with Superboy was even more nonsensical than her hitting on Tim, you'll get no argument from me on that.

In fairness they usually discuss released preview pages rather than scanned pages (past and present), but context is frequently incomplete in both cases. :)

Having read the whole comic and holding good hopes for Superboy, I have to say that I was not let down at all. Can't wait to see the TT tie in.

I really agree. I wasn't expecting much from this, honestly, because I'd figure it'd be another boring set-up issue and it would only really catch me a bit down the line, but I like it already. It totally was a set-up issue, but the characters really popped and I'm really interested in seeing where it's going.

I was a bit nervous when I first heard about the Superboy reboot but then I heard that Lobdell was writing. I remembered how much I loved his Generation X from the beginning of the comic to the end of his run. He didn't let down, this was as good as Gen X #1. :)
