No you read that correctly, there is controversy over a Duck Tales comic.

Why you ask? Well because its being hailed by critics as probably the worst Disney comic to have ever been made. My opinion is that it is probably a contender for the worst comic of the year.

This does not spell good things for the Disney/Marvel buyout and Kaboom! studios.

Anywho some art analysis from the issue in question after the cut

I won't really get into the story, it's ripe with continuity errors and the like but hey it's a comic for kids. That being said, the story is almost INSULTING to kids.

Chris Barat has a nice overview of the story for those interested

Let's immediately dig in and look at the best examples of the poor artwork from this issue

Ooooookkk analysis:

1. Characters positions are all over the place. First Farquardt is directly facing the Beagle boy and then he's coming at him from the side. Scrooge just teleports in at the 3rd panel.

2. The Beagle Boy seems to be trying to crush Farquardts head with his mind powers in the 2nd panel.

3. Unnecessary and inaccurate pointing, scale is completely wrong, warped continuity (the nameplate is missing in the 2nd panel), and just downright lazy backgrounds.

Bad as that was, it gets worse

Time for a fun game ladies and gentlemen! Scroll down and see if you can spot all the instances of copy/paste in the following panels! The answers will be below the scan (Hint: there are at least 3 instances)

1. The 4 children are just reversed in the first and 3rd panel.
2. Gladstone is copy/pasted from the 2nd to the 3rd.
3. The 4th and 5th are just shameless.

Alright Droidy, the people are asking: why should we care?

Well because it's not always been like this. Take a gander (no pun intended) through the tags for some of the Darkwing Duck and other Ducktales that Icon_UK and others have posted. You'll find that they're good...really good! The company as a whole seems to have taken a nose dive as of late, producing work of this quality.

And it saddens me.

Gladstone got a certain kind of lucky, I guess, when that packet of sugar went up his nose..

And it looks like Scrooge's making a killing in the custom cardboard standees market.

Or maybe he turned his nephews flat like cardboard in an effort to save money by making them carry-on luggage?

Does it help if Scrooge has in his bag an air pump that after he gets them back he pumps them full of air and they pop back to normal? :D

I remember seeing this over on Cartoon Brew about a month or so ago...and goddamn. As a lover of Don Rosa's Life and Times of Uncle Scrooge, this isn't just painful, it's like the art has wedged a knife into my gut and won't stop twisting it slowly. As a kid growing up, I LOVED Ducktales, which is funny because Rosa HATES it. This is just making his side of the argument valid while alienating both old and potentially new fans. Damn shame.

You have chosen...wisely.

And shortly after you finish it, you'll curse yourself for not picking up the Companion book as well, since it does a great job of expanding the stories you'll read. =D

I'd expect this kind of quality from a bad webcomic!

This isn't even a "genuinely trying" or "so bad it's good" kind of bad. It's just lazy.

From: [personal profile] roguefankc, and I thought that the reports on how bad this comic was exaggerated. I'm glad psychopathicus_rex isn't here to see this otherwise he'd have an aneurysm. =/

I have a quick question: is Boom! going to stop printing Disney comics from now on entirely, or is it just the DuckTales series? Because I bought the two Donald Duck Treasuries from Boom! and they're excellent, and it'll be depressing if they stop printing them.

And also a complete non-issue as far as I'm concerned, there's enough european Disney comics produced to sate my needs :p

Here in Duckburg
Race cars, lasers,
It's a duck blur!
Might solve a mystery...
Or rewrite history

Darn it, I can't remember what comes next ;)

Tales of derring-do, bad and good LUCK TALES, oo-OO!

D-D-DANGER/Watch behind you!
There's a stranger/out to find you!

(huh, that's kinda lazy writing, but then the rest goes...)

What to do? Just grab onto some Duck Tales, oo-oo!
Not pony tails or cotton tails but Duck Tales, oo-oo!

What the hell am I staring at? It looks like a vague attempt to make a Duck Tales comic, but Duck Tales is one of the highest-quality series in existence, despite the limitations of it's style. This is just.... garbage.

IMO the first issue of this series was okay, and I was excited to read a DuckTales ongoing as I have a special place in my heart for DuckTales.

But it slowly seems to be going downhill with each issue and I'm not sure I want to keep spending money on it.

...This just ticks me off. It's like some tracing issues they had with Sonic a ways back. Ugh. UGH.

It's not helping that I just found out that Darkwing Duck is canceled as of issue 18. Everything seemed to be going so well with Kaboom; hopefully the DWD quality at least lasts until the end...
