Some excerpts from the Star Trek Writer's Roundtable, one of the Pro2Pro Roundtables that TwoMorrows Publishing puts out. Various Trek comic book writers discuss the hassles and difficulties of doing licensed comics for a TV property...

This first part is in response to the question of, "What do you find the largest challenge in adapting Star Trek from television to comic books?

Jumping forward a bit... We're still on the same question.

This next part's in response to, "Can you compare what it was like writing
Star Trek for different companies?" (As you probably notice by now, I'm cutting out huge chunks of the roundtable.)

It's not that there can't be any overlap - in fact, the follow-up to this story has an artist who does an absolutely brilliant job: Wolverine is buffer than Riker and Picard, but Nightcrawler isn't, Worf is bigger than anyone else on either side except for Colossus, etc. The Trek characters even look recognizable without sticking out or looking traced.

It's just that this particular penciller (Marc Silvestri, I think) didn't even try to create any kind of stylistic harmony.

A sample page (http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/6605/tngxmen.jpg) from the aforementioned follow-up. That's how you do it right.

The dialogue is amazingly painful, though. But I probably shouldn't expect much.

Sweet Jesus could they have made Piotr look any stupider being that big (though I'm amused in light of the conversation just how statically posed the Trekkers are compared to the X-Men.
