This week, I have been mostly reading The Magdalena.

I had a flick through vol.1, but it was too dark and the art too cheesecakey and Top Cow-y (I know, there's a shock.) Why would the Catholic Church's black ops warrior wear a belly shirt and a pair of briefs as well as her armour and cowl? It's not like the Catholic church is a massive fan of people in their orders flaunting their flesh.

The third volume was much better, with much clearer art and a decent (but not great) story. I just need to read #8 of it and then have a look at the Phil Hester drawn Magdalena vs. Daredevil.

For those of you who don't know, this is what the Magdalena is

Our current Magdalena, Patience, is the one on the right.

Belly shirt aside, I always loved the Magdalena's costume. I'm a sucker for church/crusades inspired armor with bladed weaponry (i love all the Azrael costumes also).

I recently started this one too. And yea, every Top Cow book has improved from the early days (which were not bad for very 90s ish books, but still very 90s ish books regardless).

Considering it'll be Marz's only TC book after he leaves Witchblade I figure he'll be doing some fun stuff with it.

Yeah--a while back I was reading some of the early issues of Witchblade, and the pacing and story was actually pretty solid once you look past the fact that she's basically wearing organic armor around her bits and little else (and even that wasn't all that often as we're want to remember).

She's like a more extreme Huntress, right?
(extreme on design, religion, stories, etc..)

Well, not exactly. Her thing is she does genuinely good things- fight demons, mostly. But the organization she's doing it for and that supports her is corrupt and would rather have her as an unquestioning terminator rather than putting her own judgement into it, and they clash over this.

I'd say a more extreme Huntress is closer to what the Church may *want*, but instead they have Patience, like it or not.

Would you say the third volume is a good jumping on point? I've always liked the idea of the Magdalena. I love female paladins.

I'd like to know this too. If the spread above is from the third volume, I'm definitely interested.

There is some history that crops up that may be good to know, but you can probably fill in the blanks pretty easily.

The second volume (collected in Magdalena origins 2) is another option, as that's the one where *this* Magdalena got her start (the first one was the prior Mags).

No need to worry about the first volume at all.

Exactly. You can go back to V.2 for her first mission (which wasn't bad- better than the early TC stuff), or not, up to you.

Thanks!

The Roman centurion Magdalena looks fantastic, sigh.

I remember reading Witchblade (the first three volumes) and wondering about Magdalena, who seemed to have come out of nowhere. This makes sense.

Also that art was gorgeous.

I think she switched to that outfit when she quit the Church.

Huh, that's a very pretty double-spread. Have we met the crying girl that's on her knees with a knife in her chest?

Since she's not one of the modern Magdalena I don't think so (I haven't read all the issues), but it wouldn't surprise me if we meet her down the road.

I like the red outfit behind Patience a lot, is that the one before her?
