Aquaman #2 - 3 pages of AWESOME!

Seriously, is there anyone out there who thought "So, that 52 thing... I bet that Aquaman is going to be the best thing to come out of it"? I did not expect to care about it and yet, it is my favorite 52 title at the moment.

Here are a few pages from Aquaman 2 to show you why I love it so much:

So what we have here is:
- Arthur and Mera being a loving, caring couple
- we still get the "LOL, Aquaman, WTF, ROFLOLCOPTER" attitude of the majority and Aquaman showing them he's awesome by being awesome
- we have people who respect Aquaman
- in one issue I went from not caring in the slightest about Mera, to kinda being a bit gay for her. And when I say "a bit" I mean " a lot"
- Namor is no longer my favorite ruler of Atlantis, hence him being so annoyed on my icon. Tough luck, bb.

I just recently read an Aquaman story where he fought a polar bear!

It was cool.

Unfortunately, they made Sedna an evil sea witch.

Which was not cool.

OH I so hope to see that happen again. lol Hell in a video game, movie, t.v. series, anywhere with Aquaman, throwing a polar bear is a must! Hell with that in mind Aquaman is perfect as a figure for Coca Cola considering their use of Polar Bears.

I actually kind of like this, except for the ridiculous Aquaman strawman arguments.
Aquaman is already shown being awesome, you don't need to have this strawman of "Aquaman is so uncool!".
"Show not tell, etc. etc." addendum: if you're already showing, then why are you also telling?

I imagine it's Johns' attempt at what Simone did with Canary way back -- breaking her of the "helpless victim" role she'd been shoved into by having one last brutal capture -- that she fought her way out of.

I went into this series not knowing anything about Aquaman expect his appearances on Brave and the Bold and came out after 2 issues thinking that Mera is the one of the best females comic characters I've read.

You're just now into Mera? Someone needs to read Blackest Night and Brightest Day. lol But seriously if there's anything good Johns did lately it's establishing Aquaman as a kickass hero and he's now a definite favorite.

I stopped reading DC a long time ago and only got into it again after the relaunch.

I was really ready for DC to sync the comic book Aquaman with the Brave and the Bold Aquaman...and was mildly disappointed. Now after two issues, I'm fine with this different flavor of awesome. I will be happy, though, if sometime soon Arthur breaks into a song.

The weird thing is that Johns seems to have done little to no retconning (outside of returning Orin's biological father to a human guy) straight from Blackest Night to Brightest Day to this series and yet I still don't know what to consider canon - was there still an Aquababy who was killed by Black Manta? What about Garth? Is he still dead? And if so how come we have yet to see Arthur mourn him? Arthur's relationship with Dolphin? Aquaman and Mera's not only numerous years together but numerous separations - I mean, wouldn't she technically "know him" better than anyone else already?

See, this is one of the titles where I think the reboot works just fine. (Of course, as with Batwoman, it was announced prior to the relaunch, so probably they both benefited from being well thought out beforehand.) All the questions you put forth are questions that do not necessitate being answered in order to go forward with the series, and are also not questions which would be asked by a new reader, as none of those things are referenced in the first two issues. (My guess is that anything seen in BN/BD is still canon, which means Garth, Tula, Dolphin, Junior all existed, but may have slightly altered histories, but could be wrong.)

I thought he died IN Blackest Night, but I could be wrong. In either case his existence is acknowledged in the series, which, unless I miss my guess, will be included in 'canon'.

No he was killed in Blackest Night itself by BL Tula, just like Damage and the Hawks (Dolphin and Cerdian were killed off-panel prior to Blackest Night). Prior to that they had shown Garth in a JT Krul-written Titans issue as the new King of Atlantis.

I agree that this is awesome! I've always felt fondness for Aquaman, especially since so many people dissed him. I have a thing for underdogs. :)

I don't get Geoff Johns.

On the one hand, this isn't bad.

On the other, there goes another few dozen innocent bystanders just so the hero has something to do. Winick's the same way; it's like they can't have a villain who doesn't commit wholesale murder.

It ups the ante. If a bomb goes off and nobody is harmed, it makes page 3. If a bomb goes off and kill thousands, it makes page 1 and becomes the top hit story on every newswire.

Granted there are better ways to do it, but do you *really* care about cannon fodder people? As long as they're not having a villain wipe out the character's supporting cast, bystanders are fair game - just as in real life.

Murder? These things are essentially wild animals. They are just looking for food. There has been absolutely no maliciousness shown in their behavior.

And yeah - they are more intimidating and scary when they are shown killing people. That's just the way it works.
