It's cool that Pixar's doing a movie with a female protagonist (never even noticed that until the news for this movie came out), but...eh. It seems to be in the same quality as Cars--serviceable, but mediocre and somewhat forgettable.

You know I have had to consistently defend the fact the Car franchise is hands down the worst in Pixar? There are apparently people around me who genuinely believe it was great.

It was obnoxious when it was Doctor Hollywood, and it was worse in it's weird post-apocalyptic environment of robocars.

Seriously, where are the people? Are they sealled inside cars like that dude in Snowcrash?

I've worked on that principle for ages, made Cars a lot more enjoyable to me! :)

I'd say it's more likely that at some point in time, humanity achieved such technological superiority, it left behind it's super-intelligent manufactoring entities (ala Wall*E). The AIs reached back into history, creating beings that could easily roam the decrepit roads and highways their masters once cut across the Earth, but also making them in the master's image. Eventually, Car-manity became a recursive life form, recreating human history in Car form, unknowingly shaped by human Precursors.

Hell, you could just say it's an alternate universe Wall*E where the humans never returned and machine life took over. Branching timeline like Zelda.

Even still, I wanted Incredibles 2 before a Cars 2 (which I got the gist of on a plane ride from LAX to DFW the other day, silently checking the screen every few minutes; beyond the visual dazzle, seemed pretty shallow).

Brave will hopefully be better than HTTYD, but the stereotypical Scots jokes get a wee bit tiresome (I'll trust Pixar to be more historically accurate, but still).

It does not seem at first glance to have many of the typical signs that are usually associated with a good Pixar movie(or as I call them "shut up, I'm not crying, there's just some dust in here" movie); but it's also true that most of the relations that those movies approached were usually father-son dynamics or romantic ones, and as such this one might be keeping quite a lot under its cover that we aren't used to detect yet.

Wait and see I always see regarding Pixar.

See, that's the thing--I'm not even seeing any of those typical signs. It looks like something that, if I saw from Dreamworks or maybe even the regular Disney office, it might be okay, but just not as memorable or emotional or as fun as what I normally expect from Pixar.

Of course, some of their acclaimed ones have failed to grab me in the past--I found Finding Nemo unbelievably boring, for example--so maybe this one just isn't for me.

Positive point: "I want m'ah'freedom" might just be my new catchphrase.

Negative point: Now I can't stop imagining if Disney handed the videogame rights to some nice and talented designers and we got this crossed with Shadow of the Colossus just with bears and armies and Scottish landscapes, and...

Oh good, I'm drooling now.

It feels like a weird response to Dreamwork's How to Train Your Dragon. Except instead of Vikings we get Scots!

They feel quite similar in tone and nearly style.

To be fair, the adult Vikings were Scots as well in that movie (the kids were American accented though, bizarrely).

Still, at least the heroine in this has the right accent, originially they were going to go with Renne Zellweger or something.

Oy vey, we dodged a bullet on that one...although the current voice actress sounds a little old.

Also calling it, she changes into a bear. The synopsis and a few seconds of a bear (NOT the giant one on its hind legs, it appears a few seconds before that and looks like her expression) in the trailer. A wee bit Princess Fiona and Shrek-ish, but we'll see.
