Would have been funnier if Buffy hadn't used the same fear demon gag ten years ago.

Buffy: "This is Gachnar?"
Xander: "Big overture. Leetle show."
Gachnar (in a tiny, high-pitched voice): "I am the dark lord of nightmares. The bringer of terror! Tremble before me. Fear me!"
Willow: "He... he's so cute!"
Gachnar: "Tremble!"
Xander: "Who's the little fear demon? Come on, who's the little fear demon?"
Giles: "Don't taunt the fear demon."
Xander: "Why, can he hurt me?"
Giles: "No. It's just... tacky."

Giles: "Oh, bloody hell, the inscription."
Buffy: "What's the matter?"
Giles: "I should have translated the Gaelic inscription under the illustration of Gachnar."
Buffy: "What's it say?"
Giles: "'Actual size.'"

teehee i loved that scene. it made it look like he was coming out of this huge flaming fissure, but he was coming out of this little crack in the ground... loved Willow, a part of me thinks somewhere she has her own little fear demon pet somewhere.

also, Giles, ALWAYS read the inscription :D

Nope, funnier precisely because Buffy did this. Quite sure that Gillen is deliberately referencing that episode, although funnier still if you think about it is that the Lurking Unknown's tendency to change size depending how much fear is felt near it dates back to its first appearance in 1967, thereby far preceding Gachnar on Buffy.

Of course, there was plenty of fear in the haunted house, so if it had been the Lurking Unknown, he would have been gargantuan, whereas there was no evidence that Gachnar could grow, or even that there was any percentage in him actually manifesting physically.

I've said this a few times before, but I'd like to stress that the (wonderful) intro pages for JIM aren't actually my work. They're from the hands of the various Assistant Editors. So the current ones are being done by John Denning.

I always feel guilty, as people do assume I've done them, and they're the work of other hyper-developed-write-o-minds.

(One of the joys of getting a finished issue sent to me is seeing what the hell Denning has written about this time).

Hellstrom has the surly teenager role DOWN. Which is kinda throwing me, since I remember him being an adult in the early 1970s. Nonetheless, he's aced it.

i like kid!loki about as much as i like regular adult villain loki, so if he reverts to that i won't be sad, but boy, will i miss leah and the loki & leah adventures.
