I know the art is trying to be "young Christopher Reeve" because I can see some of the key bone structure, but DAMN is that painful.

More like "Serial killer having fetish orgasm" than world's greatest hero.

Yeah, I think what they're trying to do is have him be a mix of a bright, grinning hero, while making it have a bit of a smug smirk at the same, and there's definitely been less disturbing examples of it (Gary Franks been pulling it off well, even if his Superman's face looks disturbingly like Charlie Sheen's).

This. So this. The way this artist draws faces just creeps me out. But everything else looks so nice! My favorite panels of this page, artwise, are the ones that either don't show Clark or don't have him facing the viewer. I did like this moment... although I really really don't like that the Kents are dead in this world. (But those faces! Gah!)

Did you read the whole book? Because the page after, "Bobblehead Supes" is much, much worse. It's very creepy looking.

They've been known to be dead since more or less the DCnU was announced. There was much discussion as to whether that was a good or bad idea (I still hold with "bad" myself)

The idea is that Morrison wants to have it the way S&S originally did, that they were dead before his life as Superman even started. Much later they had to explain just how the fuck they died simultaneously. So it was Clark's fault, a disease they caught on a vacation I think he arranged.

Personally I think one day he just looked at them funny and covered it up.

Not really. They were dead for all of pre-Crisis. Post-Crisis, they'd never died, though Pa Kent was eventually killed in a present day-set story (a death that was never undone). Now they're both dead again.

Hmm. I guess I had extra-canon material like the movies and Smallville in my head. Probably unfair.
Still, I wish they weren't. I always liked Martha interacting with the DCU.

The death of Pa Kent during the Brainiac storyline was just the laziest bit of shitty writing. It was really disappointing given Johns had been doing really, really well, at that point, and then just had to take his nods to the Donner movies a little too far.

Now, I did like much of the rest of this. I really liked that Brainiac was more a "collector" than ever before and that Morrison presents collectors as people who destroy what they value by keeping it. The hate was palpable.

I like that Morrison established that not only DOESN'T Superman kill, but because of some kind of "imprint" from Krypton, he CAN'T. Your move, Geoff Johns. Please explain his mass killing of parademons in JL now, jerk.

I like that Luthor so quickly decided to accept that Brainiac was his ticket out.

I like that Superman...NEGOTIATED.

I think, especially when he started out with the jeans and T-shirt, he was kind-of a mix of Hal and Sinestro--young, brash, with the cockiness to believe he can fix the world with his bare hands.
