scans_dailyZeb Wells is really an underrated writer, and pretty much entirely due to him, Avenging Spider-Man's been a pretty fun book so far. Issue #5 was particularly good.
An antiquarian in Brooklyn has dug up one of the comics Steve drew when he was in art school, back before World War II, and reproductions of the pages ran in the Daily Bugle. Most of the Avengers are pretty amused, but Spider-Man's particularly interested, because the way he sees it, it's something he has in common with Cap.
They were both pretty geeky kids, but the way Cap sees it, the old comic pages are kid stuff. He compares it to playing with your first chemistry set, and Peter's response is that, well, he does still do that from time to time.
They go off and have a fairly routine mission fighting the Serpent Society, which has not been having a good year so far, and when they get back:

Date: 2012-04-06 12:56 pm (UTC)Awww, but the best panel, imo, was when Spidey is at the door and says that he does still play with his old chemistry set, and he doesn't know why he lied about it. I felt his pain, it sucks when you still do 'childish' things and you feel like you have to lie about it. But then he's honest because he doesn't know why he'd be ashamed and ahsgshshgs.

While I know it's been canon since the sixties that, in the Marvel Universe, Marvel publishes officially sanctioned books about real superheros, I wonder why superhero comic books would be popular in a world where the only thing those comics can do is print the same type of stories that probably show up in the newspapers every day.
I'd think that in a world where superheros exist, the most popular comic books would be things like teen humor and romance, the most popular thing that Marvel ever published would be Patsy Walker from the 40s through the 60s, Archie Andrews there is like Superman is here, and Harvey Comics is still a major part of the industry.
