That was such a WHAT THE FUCK moment with robot sex.
Okay, swearing went from natural and realistic, to simply forced and being there just for the sake of it. But one think I must give the series: Every character feels like a real person. Even the robot prince, who seems to be the asshole of the story, feels like a normal guy, who just sees the things from diffrent angle.
You know, the old science versus magic spiel has been used so often that it's refreshing to witness these occasions when the writer can make it work, and not simply be a hindrance to the story.
I was curious about this and wow this makes me even more curious... Interesting how in the beginning of the scans I wasn't that fond of the art and thought it was a bit too many concepts cobbled together but once I got used to it, it all fit together in a really cool way. BKV does good stuff. I'll check out the trade when it's released.
Are there more variations on horns on The Wreath? Goat-horns and unicorn horns are pretty different things. But of course a unicorn one is a ruler/higher-up. :P
You know..what would make the robot sex more awesome is if they were showing porn on their..umm faces. So if they and any other party are into voyeur, well...double the show...stop looking at me like that.
It's the tele-idiots things from that one incredibly trippy issue of New Mutants where they got sucked into a TV world (no, not Mojo, ANOTHER TV world).
I have the biggest lady-boner for Brian K. Vaughan's writing. Seriously. Everything he writes is like freaking gold. Even if he started writing Youngblood or Bomb Queen, I WOULD START PICKING THEM UP.
Plus the art in this is really neat. It fits the story really well. (He always seems to get artists who work with his writing style.)
This is wicked going to end up being one of those books I buy in trade and floppies.
"They've pulled a man's spine out through his urethra! I'm not exaggerating, I've seen them do it!"
I feel this way about BKV's writing. I haven't read Y yet, but having read all of Ex Machina and his Runaways, I'm pretty confident in agreeing with you.
The difference with his Bomb Queen is that there would actually be, you know, a point to it; I could see him making it an interesting look into a villain that won, without making it overly ridiculous or exploitative but still fun; I know Bomb Queen's supposed to be sexy, but too often, it just goes way, way beyond that and into just.. Bad taste. It's just depressing because Image are really kind-of more progressive than nearly any other company in terms of who and what they're publishing and what they're going to publish - at least compared to other companies - and yet there are just some embarrassing holdovers from their 90's period, like Liefeld and Bomb Queen.
Yeah, one of the things I hate about Bomb Queen is how close it is to being a story I'd want to read. There are some good concepts there, but they get lost in the main character's god-mode dickery and weird cheesecake art.
The thing is, even BQ's god-mode dickery and plot invulnerability could be funny and even hilarious under the right pen. As you point out, Vaughan would be a good choice - partially because of the weird twist on his Ex Machina set up, and partly because he knows how to make such humour and characters work.
Pair him with a decent artist, and it'd be great, because Bomb Queen isn't an awful concept, but the execution is like watching a Uwe Boll movie whilst people rip out your fingernails and your least favourite song is playing.
In fairness, he took over Swamp Thing for a while, and it allegedly sucks to the point of being retconned out by fans, like the final season of Gargoyles.
Love this book! Fiona Staples' art + BKV's writing is an excellent meld. Also, my favourite part is the cover to no. 1: a woman breast feeding -- on the cover! I find that breast feeding in public places (or... Facebook) is so demonized or somehow considered a dirty act by puritanical people who don't understand that it's to feed a child that this cover was refreshing! Alana and Marko are definitely my new favourite couple.

''GAHG! You have to be kidding me!'' *Stands in a corner, hissing and shaking.*
That is all.
