As much as I'm enjoying some elements of the DCnU - the idea of Clark Kent being a mopey loner whose only release is his superhero identity? That's another character beginning with 'S' entirely, DC.
That's not a DCnU element. Johns was already pulling that act in the pre-Flashpoint days. And going back further, Silver Age Superman's defining characterization point was arguably his loneliness.
That aspect of Superman was there since the very first Superman story--so long that it's more likely that Spider-Man got it from Superman, and not the other way around.
I liked Birthright's explanation: that Clark's mopey loner act was just that. An act meant to keep anyone from suspecting that Clark and Superman were one and the same.
The first Superman origin story I read was Birthright, so that might be why I find it fairly difficult to understand this current take on the character. To be honest, I think it's blatantly unnecessary. At this point, anyone who buys a Superman comic, watches a Superman movie, whatever, can suspend their disbelief that no-one picks up on Clark Kent being Superman, especially with the incredibly rubbish disguise.
Well, I have. And I love the first movie and the Donner cut of the second. But.. As great as Christopher Reeve is in both roles, I still don't buy that, realistically, no-one would just look at Superman's face and go "Hey Clark." One of the things I liked the most about All-Star Superman was the invoking of this, where I got the feeling that EVERYONE at the Daily Planet knew Clark was actually Superman but said nothing, and yet Luthor was completely unable to link the two.
I really liked the interactions between Clark and Bruce, and Barry and Hal. It seems like they are actually friends. I was worried that that would be lost.
They should have coordinated that story beforehand. All Barry would have done was start vibrating his hand as he moved toward Weapons Master and WM would have sung like a canary.
GodDAMN, Clark. Are you seriously emoing about being picked last for sports while eating a crappy sandwich on your lunch break? I suddenly want to give you an enormous wedgie and leave you hanging by it inside your locker.
Maybe he's more sad about the fact that he's fully capable of being a freakin sports star, but has to hide it so he can lay low. And that habit has carried on to his adult life.
He is not emoing, Its just a "moment", It happens when you have to eat lunch while workin. Beign the fastest typewriter doesnt mean he doesnt struggle with writers block
frankly, there's no reason he has to be picked last in gym basketball. It's not like he'd be denying anyone a scholarship if he decided to show a decent lay up for example.
