I think the one in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys also liked Hephaestus--after some Stocholm Syndrome, but still.
Yeah, those three pages were stuck out the most to me. One is another sad case of "Everyone Hates Hades" (as per the Trope). Another is just an amazing way to portray Aphrodite and the last is an interesting cliffhanger.
Man, I really liked Tony Atkins' art here a lot more then the last time he was on--it seems like they let him have his own style instead of doing a half-hearted Chiang impression.
*sigh* I do so wish Hades got a better rep. Sure, he was a bit of a crumudgeon, but being the Unfavorite Lord of the Dead will do that to you. Just once I'd like to see him not be evil, with a loving wife.
In the Canadian cartoon Class of the Titans, he's a really good natured, kinda foppish guy. He and his wife also practically define Sickening Sweethearts, pet names and all. It's a pretty fun take on them.
As I recall Hades was actually presented as dour but benevolent in Wonder Woman stories post-Crisis. He was on the side of good in War of the Gods, and his former wife Hecate was behind all the badness.
In the greek myths I read in High School I remember the story was Zeus, Posiedon and Hades competed or drew lots or something and when he got the underworld he complained it was just his luck basically.
This kind of passive sadist doesn't work for me.
What version of the myths is the author working with?
Oh come on! Poor bastard literally draws the short straw that gets him stuck with the most dour domain in the world... he 100% does his job. Gets a dog, a wife... Doesn't screw everything on two legs.
People hate him because he doesn't just let everybody out of death! For doing his job! He gets depicted as a villain instead of the guy who turns into bulls to screw ladies!
You know, when Hercules had to capture Cerberus, he ASKED PERMISSION first. And Hades said sure, if you can overpower him, just don't hurt him.
I'm confused though what the difference is between the god of death (Thanatos) and the god of the underworld (Hades). Is there any appreciable distinction? There doesn't seem to be any to me.
P.S. I'm basing this "knowledge" of Greek mythology on mostly comics and playing the God Of War series, so apologies in advance for my ignorance.
Thanatos is more like the Grim Reaper. He's the travel agent between life and death.
Hades is the manager of the Underworld resort. He not only rules the dead, he also rules everything within the earth. Precious metals, jewels, etc. are all part of his domain. In a way, he's the god of wealth as well as the underworld.
