MOD POST: Theme Week free-for-all

Who wants to think about theme weeks again? It's been on our minds, over in the mod comm. We're hoping to see the love meme come back on the fairly-regular and the One Perfect Moment theme deserves another airing, don't you think? Ayes and Nays below.

On a newer thought, what say you to a post/day/weekend/week where we share the best current under-funded comic-making kickstarters that we've come across? A lot of us don't have a lot of money of course but perhaps we can influence things with our thought powers, or leave the actual funding to our rich.

Beyond that, it is time again for us to listen to the whispers and suggest/support various other theme week ideas. Whatcha got?

Personally I would like to see a "No Big Two" week, but.. could the community stand it??

And, personally, while I'd like to see stuff from smaller companies, or non-American comics promoted, I'm not sure this is the way to do it.

There has been so much copyright/ownership/creator rights news recently that I would LOVE to get a what-if glimpse of a world without Marvel or DC - or at least, their "Marvel" and "DC" published titles.

It's probably a horribly unpopular thought, but there's no reason not to suggest it anyway!

I think if it was put under another name, we could hack it. Bringing a greater emphasis to non-DC, non-Marvel comics would be really cool, and highlighting titles from other mediums. I mean, that's how I got into Extreme Comics' new brand of heroes with Glory and Prophet.

I think it's worth the try. Once it's set I'll even get to work scanning my volumes that I have saved elsewhere seeing as that has been the biggest detractor from me posting European comics.

I wondered if that might be the case for some! Big two stuff gets a lot of commentary, for obvious reasons, and provides a lot of fun and interest but I do wonder if the popularity of that is actually detrimental to other aspects of the community's area of interest.

A "No big two week" would be okay,plus it would be the first time I'll doing this. But the thing is could resist a week without both DC and Marvel??

There's been a lot of hubub and changes over who's in the "Big 2's" roster and who's dead, and what constitutes a worthy death of a character.

I'd like to see a Heroic Last Stand week for the times that character deaths were done RIGHT, handled maturely and beautifully, like the obvious Skurge the Executioner death, or Barry Allen's death in CoIE. I think there's some other recent ones that could be named as well - in the Sonic the Hedgehog lore, I'd definitely like to see more context for Sally's "roboticization" in recent events... think that'd definitely count as a death of some kind. (Definitely churned my gut to see that happen to her, as a long-time on-and-off Sonic fan. :( )

My second idea for a theme week's a bit more nebulous and I'm not sure it would fit, but why not something like The Best of the Square Panels week? This'd be a focus on writing during the action, in which the narrator of the action is really putting out the stops to dramatize what's going on in the panels, or adding further context to a poignant scene.

For the above, I'd include Starman's battle with the Mist's son as a great example, as we see him really wrestling with what exactly his brother meant to him as he's avenging his untimely death. I'd also include Moon Knight's battle with Bushman on Marvel's side of things, a really cool spin on the whole "Batman versus Joker" hero/villain rivalry. And if there's any time when Claremont's heavy-handed method of narration made a scene really cool, I'd like to see that as well!

Since I've just had "Dude in Distress Week" I feel spoiled enough, and since "One Perfect Moment" was sort of my idea, I feel I shouldn't vote for it, though I remain a fan of the concept of course.

Thumbs down for an exlusionary "No Big Two" theme week for reasons outlined above, though I have no objection to a "Yay, Independents!" week or something similar that encourages little-known works rather than suppressing popular mainstream ones.

Something to highlight comic-based kickstarters definitely sounds like a good idea.

So "exclusionary" is coming up a lot - would a week that really discourages Marvel & DC, in a "post anything you can think of before you post those, but if there's really nothing else then go ahead and give us that" be just as bad as what's imagined? No punishments or post deletions, obv, but just to see if it could work?

The Kickstarters promotion idea is interesting. At least it lets us know that there are projects that might interest us out there, right? Even if we can't donate for whatever reason...

Now as far as suggestions go, I'd love to see another round of Positive Comics Week happen.

Also, how about an International Comics week to promote more non-Marvel, non-DC works without the exclusion that "No Big Two" week could imply? I've been thinking about this sort of thing for a while now, actually, without getting around to doing much about anything...

Re: kickstarters (and other financing apparatus sites) Right - those of us who can't afford to fund our dream projects with ideal creator teams can at least get the information that they're happening delivered right to us, can support the projects in comments (and maybe sway other, more flush members with our enthusiasm), and pass on the facts to friends and others in our wider circles.. again maybe leading to better funding for these projects.

I don't think it's necessary to exclude Marvel and DC comics, but some sort of "Beyond the Big Two" week would be cool. I have some more ideas for Judge Dredd posts that are just waiting on eBay deliveries and a few more scans...

For a theme, I've been itching for a MANLINESS WEEK.

Nothing but the manliest men in comics doing the manliest things possible - Guts, Kenshiro, The Saint of Killers, Jotaro, and many more besides doing what Manly Men do best; kicking ass, taking names, and chewing bubble gum.

...and they're all out of bubble gum.

And no, this is not a badass week. For you see, anyone can be badass, even for a moment. But MANLINESS is a lifestyle (and also because it would be more tongue in cheek and we could have more fun with it).

We've had a suggestion on the emails, from JWF who is having trouble with dreamwidth account creation, I shall copy and paste it for your perusal:

"My idea is Dropped Threads week. What are peoples' favorite stories that never went anywhere? Questions that were never answered? Dangled tidbits that, someday, some aspiring comics writer might remember and finally answer?

My personal favorite was giant Bruno Mannheim from the Superman One Year Later days. The last we saw "Ugly", he had been in deep with the Church of Crime and was taken down by the new Batwoman. He then disappeared, promising doom on the Man of Steel and ... never showed up again.

Now I'm guessing this was supposed to have something to do with the Death of the New Gods (may it never be spoken of again). So that's my idea. I'm sure there are other instances like this out there (especially in cases where writers left a book abruptly, or a universe was rebooted). Scans Daily, I give you, Dropped Plots and Hanging Threads week. Have at it."

Let's be silly.

Best scene with a mustache.
Scenes of women kicking ass in appropriate costumes.
Scenes with smoking.
Scenes without words.
Characters eating.
Your favorite character being written badly.
Characters missing a punch, mistiming a jump, or otherwise falling.

I shall put all of these into a poll; the most popular being the soonest implemented, I think.
