Well, before Hypertime writers couldn't use parallel universes in DC stories. A universe where everybody is evil, a zombie, has a beard was almost impossible.
Some writers managed to pull it off from DCU Vertigo books where they didn't care about stupid limiting rules like that, or they showed a parallel universe but called it a "pocket universe" just so everyone could pretend it was something else; because for some reason a certain number of dumb fans had convinced themselves that the multiverse was a bad thing and that it was too complicated for their feeble minds and that's why it had to go away. Never mind that Marvel had a multiverse and nobody complained; probably not even the same fans who complained about DC but also read Marvel.
So, Mark Waid presented the concept of Hypertime to bring back the concept of multiverse without undoing Crisis on Infinite Earths. And that's how we got Grant Morrison's Earth 2 book and other things like the Superboy: Hypertension storyline. And then DC published Infinite Crisis and we all have to pretend that never happened and that the multiverse was back at last.
And that's the short version of why I should rule the universe and my death squads should ride across the land thinning the herd.
