Whom I miss very much. I mean, this side of Daken in particular. The one who knows Greek tragedies by heart, who taught himself to read Greek as a child, who enjoys making people think he's something he's not, then shocking them with what he is.
I remember reading this while flipping through the Utopia hardcover. Pretty sure this story alone not only made me fall in love with Daken but also made me buy that hardcover
See, THIS is the Daken I know and had grown to love entirely. The snarky yet sophisticated Magnificent Bastard with an ace up his sleeve and constantly playing people to his own ends.
And now he's running the Brother of Evil Mutants and characterized as a revenge nut with all of his classiness having been flushed, it seems.
"The snarky yet sophisticated Magnificent Bastard with an ace up his sleeve and constantly playing people to his own ends."
Which was basically him using his rape-tastic powers all the time to make everyone around him idiots. I swear, Daken made James Patterson villains look subtle and clever.
Also, revenge nut is a pretty good description for Daken. The guy wants to kill his dad because of what Logan did to the mom he never met.
He likes to control people. It's his thing, and the powers help him play people.
And he can't turn it off. His pheromones, I mean. It's kinda why the dad and mom he loved (Akihira and Natsumi) got killed. It's part of him, so he uses it. He's got no qualms or any sense of goodness. For him, it's all about power.
Meanwhile, he stopped on the revenge track when he found out the truth. It eventually just became about overthrowing Wolverine to gain power. Power power power.
That might be what the writer thought he was doing, but in virtually every Daken appearance I've read, all he did was go "I'm evil and bi-sexual! Fear me as I kill for no reason!"
Again, he makes James Patterson villains look subtle.
i don't know... i think that's just an oversimplification of the character. Daken as a character is actually very nuanced and complicated.
he's never claimed to be good or evil. he's selfish. at one point he DID try to go good, even being befriended by the Fantastic Four. and becoming buddies with Johnny storm, once he died Daken when back off the wagon, so to speak.
the way he is being played NOW IS more like a James Patterson villain
Right? Plus I wouldn't mind him running the show so much if his characterization was correct, but it's.... uneducated biker punk more than magnificent bastard.
.... he doesn't kill people for money, unless my memory is rusty. And Daken's always been big on doing what he wants, as opposed to answering to animal instinct/insanity. He hates losing control like that. For him, killing people is control. For Norman, it's answering to the disembodied voice of a goblin that may or may not even exist outside his head.
.... he doesn't kill people for money, unless my memory is rusty.
No? My mistake. I guess Dakken isn't a "hired assassin."
In that case, I thought Dakken was like Sabretooth. Only Sabretooth kills for money, to mess with Logan, his own amusement, to satisfy his bloodlust, to avenge a perceived insult, etc. etc.
Daken sort of has a lust for power, so he claws his way to the top because he felt he was deprived of his rightful place, the one he was promised since he was a kid.
He kills people for himself. Or for some hidden agenda, I suppose.
I still don't like Daken, but I dislike the modern, supposed puppet-master Norman even more, so this is cool. Norman thinks he's Hannibal Lecter, but he's really just one of the random loonies in the cell next to Lecter that the good doctor used to mess with out of boredom.

Daken hates the idea of going insane :0
