New Mutants 47 Preview

We need more of this sort of thing in comic books. Especially a title like the New Mutants



Following the defeat of a big bad last issue, where they found out that in the future, Doug would rise to become a sort of benevolent dictator; the Truefriend (a sort of parody on Doug being Warlocks SelfSoulFriend)

Exposure to the alien mentality a while back, and which had been commented on would have a cumulative effect on Doug's brain, and he'd become smarter and smarter, learn to hack the TO virus completely and take control of the world using technorganic matter, making everyone happy and contented, whether they wanted to be or not).

A time travelling Cannonball and Karma came back to try and prevent that, and whilst too late to prevent Doug meeting the alien mentality, they were able to defeat future-Doug from travelling back and taking control early). Present-day Sam and Xian stay to see their friends again, though Sam and Dani are not at all sure that Doug knowing about his future will prevent it, and to his credit, Doug is also unsure.

But that doesn't mean it has to be all doom and gloom and they go out for a meal (Art here is by Felix Ruiz and I have to say I like it more than the previous art)

Already has for most them probably. Its not like Blink isn't related to Apocalypse or anything...

In one future in the original New Mutants run (When Magik scattered them to two different futures when sideswiped by Magus) we saw a world where Sunspot and Magma had become the new King and Queen of the Hellfire Club and basically ran the world with mutants keeping flatscans in check. In the other world, Sentinels ran the world after destroying ALL superbeings, and Dani and Sam were the fairly brutal leaders of the Mutant Resistance.

It really was Doug's turn more than anything

At least they went to the trouble of tinting it green... not a green I'd normally associate with a margarita but, green (She's possibly having hers with a dash of absinthe, or creme de menthe! :) )

I've been really enjoying the New Mutants when they do stuff like this. Just a bunch of mutants hanging out, talking, having fun. I've enjoyed some of the more heavy plots, particularly the one with Illyana's super awesome revenge plan, but for the most part I feel like the book really shines when it's just people being people. (The Blink party issue is one of my new favorite comics.)


Aaaaaaand cancelled. Sigh.

If not I'm sure in a few years they resurrect the title, just a shame that it has to end

We simply don't know yet. They've only announced the relaunches in October and November so far, and we know there are more books starting in December and January...

Is Blink even old enough to drink? Wasn't she the same age as Jubilee? Jubes has been 18ish for years.....

Jubilee is an immortal vampire now, so she'll be 18 for a while.

Husk, Chamber and Monet are all treated as adults though.

if the title had more moments like this early on, I'd probably still be reading it. I like this kind of stuff a lot. But after giving it a try up until it got dragged into multiple crossovers, something just didn't gel. Maybe the lack of Rahne and the treatment of the New X-men kids in the very first issue soured me to the whole thing. I know some writers love drama between characters, but I'd much rather read this than characters I like being assholes to one another.

Have they ever addressed that when Doug died, he was in his mid-teens and is now an adult?

Addressed? No, but it's easily handwaved away considering that magic was heavily involved in his return, and he was then able to hack the TO virus that revived him so he wasn't covered in threads of transmode any more. Either the spell restored him at the age he would have been had he never died, or else he added it in himself when reprogramming the virus.

I'm still more miffed we've never seen him address the issues of coming back from the dead, like, say, what did he tell his parents, if indeed he ever did.

Oh, man. What about Kitty? Have they interacted at all? I'm just remembering when she and Rahne went to his grave and phased down. I forgot how close they were. He's one of those characters that I liked and kind of regretted not knowing much about.

No Kitty time that I've seen, which is a crying shame, nor Rahne nor Betsy time... no wonder Doug's feeling out of sorts these days.
