"I’m also super interested in delving into how mutant resurrection changes things for everybody — if you really believe that death isn’t permanent and that you might live forever, how does that affect the way you live your life?" - Charlie Jane Anders

"They are kind of the circle of the Venn diagram of my interests, storywise: headstrong teens/young adults, the potential for horror/heavy stories, found family dynamics, and a true variety of characters (in terms of gender, ethnicity, orientation, etc.). A gold mine from the jump!"

"Who’s running things on Krakoa? And by running I don’t mean like, government running but like, what’s everyday life like on Krakoa? What’s it like for these mutants that have never had their own safe place? Like, once you get in, what do you do? Like, paradise to me, it sounds well and good for vacation, but they’re these are people that are used to being fists-up all the time. What does that look like when suddenly you have this weird new space to explore? And I would just constantly ask all kinds of questions about the map. Like, you can’t name something the Wild Hunt and not tell me what goes on there. That sounds incredible. And you know, Jonathan, we call him Papa Hickman sometimes, Jonathan would just turn it around and be like, I don’t know; you tell me. What are the answers to your questions? Like, let’s talk it out. And as we would start to have these these conversations, you know, I thought this would be really great to do on the page. And that’s kind of how a lot of people are running their books, I think, is that they have these things that they want to work through, but they want to work through it on the page so that people that read the books are going along with us as we’re having these conversations and these journeys." - Vita Ayala

"Okay, what are the fundamental important parts of this story? And so I try as much as possible to have that be my True North, whenever I’m working on something. And with New Mutants, there's just been so much really great stuff to pull from, and it’s been remarkably consistent in terms of what's core to the New Mutants—not any characters in particular, but to a title that is called the New Mutants."

"I wanted to know if the kids were all right. Who's driving this thing? We're used to the X-Men essentially training kids to be child soldiers, but that's not the case anymore. They're on paradise. What would kids do on paradise? They would get into trouble, I think." - Vita Ayala

"There are only 3 Mutant Laws, & none of them require someone to give up personal choice in that way. There as many way to be a mutant as there are mutants, so I would say that if some books - with different characters - approach it in different ways, that is a good thing." - Vita Ayala

'I thought to myself, "Well, one of the things that has a little bit bothered me about Shadow King is that he seems very cartoonish." It's not just him being a mustache-twirling villain, there was also just a lot of Orientalism going on, but nothing pinned down. So, looking at him and his origins as a person and as the Shadow King, I thought, "to survive, sometimes you do certain things and then you think that that's the only way to survive, because it worked for you." That's what I was interested in exploring with him. He's here on the island because he actually believes in the island, but he's messed up. You shake him and you hear broken glass.' - Vita Ayala

"Signed on literally for 5 minutes and saw I was tagged multiple gross ableist comments re: Karma choosing to be Resurrected so that she still had her prosthetic. So Imma sign out again bc I don't need that in my life. But before I do, lemme say this. Disabilities, and people who have disabilities exist. There is nothing immoral about being disabled, and there is nothing moral about not being disabled. In fact, equating morality to not being diasbled is not just gross, it's fucking dangerous. Just because YOU would change something about yourself doesn't mean others would or ought to. Everyone has a unique relationship with their own body. You do not get to choose how others view themselves or what they love about themselves." - Vita Ayala

"Dani picks probably a Miyazaki movie, honestly; Magik picks Forged In Fire; Warlock picks Adventure Time; Rahne picks Raised By Wolves (ha ha) or Star Trek: Next Generation; Karma picks Xena: Warrior Princess; Warpath picks Repair Shop on Netflix, or Stargate: Atlantis (he seems the type)." - Vita Ayala

CBR: As someone who was very pleased to see you bring Cannonball and Sunspot into the Avengers fold during your popular run, can we look forward to you bringing them home now that you'll be working on the X-Men?

Hickman: I won't be bringing them home.
