Least I Could Do may not be everyone's cup of tea, but every so often, there are things that need to be said, and this says one of them beautifully.

Then, the next day...

Testify, Rayne. Testify.

Really? Because "The More You Know" is a pretty old joke now (it was dated even when Family Guy did it), and I find this type of pandering to be just as shallow as anything else.

The joke is that the Kardashians' baby plans are getting more press than the Curiosity lander. The More You Know logo is simply to make it look like a public service announcement and isn't really the joke despite being in the last panel.

Stating a fact/opinion isn't a joke.

I don't think I've checked LICD since Gutters came around.
How odd.
Either way, it's Olympics+Curiosity+Torrential Monsoon Rains on the news feed for us, since no one outside the U.S. cares about the Kardashians anyway.

I catch a little from what I see on TMZ and other live via satellite/close to U.S. airing shows we get over here around noon. Very little. But the parents seemed intelligent in that clever/sneaky hollywood way. I liked them.

I don't really know why... since I don't care for the celebrity gossip all that much.

But this just boils down to telling people off for what they like - which I've always found incredibly annoying. If the Mars Curiosity project, (which, I'm sorry, is just not that interesting in terms of face value), is getting less attention than general gossip, then it's not anyone elses fault but its own.

It'd be nice to have these kind of things, things that could broaden peoples intelligence have far more coverage, better treatment, and become more engaging, because as they are now, who could blame someone for being more interested in what Kim's doing with Kanye.

Anyway... I feel like a Debby Downer now :D

Yeah, there's a snobbery about this which sets my teeth on edge. It was similar around the time of the Curiosity landing when a meme was going around comparing the cost of that and the cost of the Olympics, as if they were somehow mutually exclusive and Curiosity was so much more worthwhile, according to some invisible scale of value. But even with the Kardashian thing, it is possible to be interested in stuff like Curiosty and what are perceived to be more lowbrow interests and the preachyness of stuff like this irritates. Let people follow whatever interests they like, y'know?

Oh I could never object to lowbrow interests, or at least if I did it would be hilariously hypocritical. For me the "less expensive than the Olympics" line is a shorthand way of saying "hey, my technoporn is not that expensive relatively speaking." Though I think it is probable that many of my geeky brethren do think in terms of the Olympics being a massive waste of money that could be spent on more giant rockets thrusting into space...

I agree with everything you said Angelophile , treating things as mutually exclusive is a terrible way to go about alot of things, and it just comes off as smug, not intelligent.

There's a certain unfortunate trending in American guy-focused media that's basically "Let us tell you what to think!" You see it very clearly in magazines like Maxim, where one of the most frequent micro-features will be a quick series of the author's value judgments expressed as fact.

"Least I Could Do" very much draws upon that kind of thing for its humor. I didn't quite pick up on that until you mentioned "invisible scale of value," but you know what, there it's been this entire time.

I absolutely agree with this. I can't stand Jersey Shore, and I definitely can't stand to hear about the Kardashians, but to a degree, you do have to go out of your way to hear/read/watch these things. I do lament that the most popular form of television at the moment seems to be reality TV, but.. Well, no-one's making these people watch it.

Yes, it's awful, yes, it sets the wrong example to the younger set - I'm sure there are some out there who thought it was great Kim got away with the amount of money she did after that pathetically short wedding - but.. Well, there's always been stuff that sets a bad example. No-one's making people watch this stuff, and as angelophile points out, just because a person has interest in something ostensibly 'low-brow' doesn't mean they won't enjoy something more thoughtful. I'm a guy who got his degree in Fine Art - whatever that's worth - a little over a year ago. That means, you know, I'm pretty much in the know about cutting-edge, contemporary art in all it's pretentiousness. But that doesn't mean I can't enjoy comics, which are always perceived as more low-brow.

As it is, let's be fair: space exploration hasn't been a huge deal with the public for years, now - that's even one of the notes in Apollo 13 - and the last really, really big deal was the Pathfinder rover, from what I remember. If they were sending men to the Moon again, or sending them to Mars - impossible at the moment, I know - then I think that would be a much bigger deal.

Reality TV is the natural evolution of Victorians paying to go and look at the inmates in Bedlam. I think it's pretty gross, but it's not new.

You know, this post is the first time I've learned about the Kardashians having baby plans. (And I have no idea what those plans are.) But I've heard about Curiosity from multiple sources.

In conclusion, I don't think the best way to ignore something is making comics about it.

Also, if I recall correctly, Least I Could Do is about the sex life of an expy of the writer. So his personal life is worthy of attention. But not the Kardashians'. For some reason.

Yeah, I'm having a hard time figuring out why reading People magazine is worse than reading about Rayne nearly killing a "midget hooker" (as he calls her a million times) with his giant penis or trying to catch a newly hired lesbian with a piece of carpet on a stick. (Around the time I stopped reading. He does stuff like that to this woman and she finds it charming. What the hell?)

Exactly. If you're excited about space exploration, why not do a comic about how/why that is?
