So the first issue of the new Gambit on going was pretty good. Fun, slick, well paced, well focused. Good, intriguing start. And more importantly it was hot.
Love the detail of Quire's essay btw.
Naked's nice, but sometimes a guy in a catsuit is good too.
"I am STARRO... by way of Alien.... and a bit of The Matrix wormy bug thing! And I'm in the wrong bloody comic universe, oh well, never mind..."
I have long though Gambit's outfit to be one of the worst around (and I say that in full awareness of my own costume preferences tending towards the unsubtle), sorry Gamby old boy, but the pink leotard thingie always looked hideous.
One thing I did like about Claremont's X-Men Forever was that Gambit preferred a stylish suit over the raincoat and leotard.
At least he acknowledges the silliness of it, but also the brashness it takes to pull it off (not literally, despite the evidence on show in these panels).
The thing about this costume is, nearly all the attempts to revamp it have actually been worse. The suit in X-Men Forever looked okay, but kind of odd when he was surrounded by all his spandex wearing pals.
As a long time Gambit fan, it was great to see him go back to basics, and just enjoy some honest thievery again. It had a sort of Mission Impossible feel to the actual job. Slick, hi-tech and efficient, but with a bit of wryness as well.
And I liked Gambit being reflective and a little self derogatory at the beginning. His life certainly has been pretty crappy over the last few years, thanks to various writing misfires.
Plus, the detail in those first couple of pages is wonderful. Quentin Quire's essay comparing Wolverine to Stalin, the post it note saying "Call Sarah" (confirmed by James Asmus to be Marrow). It's a shame about the lingering connections to Rogue, but I guess they can be broken later on, when things get into their stride.
And Asmus has hinted at Gambit operating in the wider Marvel Universe in this book. Interacting with characters outside of the X-Men, and perhaps not being seen as the hero of the piece all the time. That should all be a lot of fun as well.
I think it was under the nipple. You can see one of it's tentacles sort of starting to burrow into his skin in that panel where he says "what the hell?!"
Either that or it was just enjoying the feel of his skin before it got to work....
