For the kind people who have been asking what my next new project will be, the sort of next Mister Miracle/Vision ambitions hopefully cool limited series thing, there’s a big hint/clue in Heroes in Crisis 5, which is out this Wednesday. -- Tom King

"If we did a story about the universe ending or worlds colliding, everyone would see right through that. That’s every Thursday. So we counter programmed. What makes it a ‘crisis,’ Earth-shattering as Marv Wolfman and George Pérez did, is that if you care about it, if you’re emotionally invested in it, if you feel it’s real in your heart. That’s what I’m going for, the emotional connection. Not just repeating those same beats." - Tom King

I can tell somebody, “Look, I used to fight Al-Qaeda, and also sometimes I can't get my hand to stop shaking.” Those two things can be true. You can be a man and still be weak, and still love your family, and still say that I got help and I got through this with help. To me, watching my father’s generation run away from that help and embrace ponytails and fast cars when they hit that moment, I feel like we can go a different way, especially in this time of anxiety. We can lean on each other and find a way to fight back all this stuff.

Superman went through this. Batman went through this. Wonder Woman went through this, and I started thinking about the lives they lived. I started thinking about Batman watching his second son die and holding him in his arms. I started thinking about Superman. When he’s 21, he has to give up his identity. I think about Wonder Woman, raised to be a warrior trying to bring peace and her finding compassion in having to always be the strong one. Batman and Superman are always whining. You never see her whining. I wanted to write about that, and how they got there. They didn't get there by being the silent, tough types. They got there by going through something, by leaning on people, and after getting that help, helping people.

'The way Mister Miracle started was me going to Dan DiDio and asking him, “I want to do something amazing with a character, but you have to give me some room to do some stuff, and you pick the character.” He picked Mister Miracle and that’s how that started. It’s unoriginal, but I wanted to repeat that success. So when I came up with this Heroes in Crisis idea, I went back to Dan and said, “Can we do this again? Give me two heroes, I’m going to put them through the ringer and at the end we’re going redefine them to be central to the DCU, pillars of this universe.” And the two he gave me were Booster Gold and Harley Quinn.' - Tom King

I'm such a simple writer. I only write sort of little simple themes, and there are two driving themes of the whole thing and those are Catwoman and Batman and their love, and Bane and Batman and their hate. It's contrasting those two just simple concepts. That's the driving engine of all 100 issues, from issue 1 to issue 103, which is where I'm gonna end the whole series. -- Tom King

"If left alone, would Superman get old and then die from old age? On the one hand, no. On the other hand, he has aged (let's say) thirty-four years in thirty-four years; what's to stop the pattern?" - Tom King

He exists in two ways in my head. He's unlike any other character in fiction—I come from novels, and the entire idea of writing is about balancing motivations. The Joker is not like that. He doesn't have motivation. You could write a twelve issue series where he's like, "I'm gonna get the Holy Grail" and the whole time he's like John Wayne in The Searchers and is just obsessed with the Holy Grail and then he gets there and finds the Holy Grail and just walks away. It makes no difference to him, whether he succeeds or doesn't succeed. The second thing is, in my version of the Joker, the way I like to view it, I kind of think it's all an act? I like to think he's sane underneath it all. -- Tom King
