When a woman loves and marries a man she is not obligated to adopt all of his values. Selina retains her sense of self and her sense of morality, and Bruce loves her because she does, not despite it. -- Tom King

I remember people being mad when I brought Catwoman into BATMAN. It was like, “Oh, this is a tired romance. Nobody cares about this anymore.” Now that it’s on every billboard in my neighborhood... -- Tom King

The criminal reaches for the pearls, and Batman ends up falling for someone whose sole purpose is to steal jewelry. That’s some fucked up Freudian shit, man. -- Tom King

He will always have this sense of self of who he is as Batman, and yeah, Selina is the exact opposite when she's Catwoman. She's had one of these lives where who she was at 10 is not who she is when she was 20, she's not who she is at 30 who she was at 20, she's not who she is at 40 who she was at 30...and people live both of those lives. There are people who are like 'I'm the same who I was at 16!' and there are some that just transform every year. -- Tom King

I’ve written a lot of books about falling in love and finding comfort in each other. This isn’t that. It’s about how two people affect and can’t affect each other. [Catwoman] came to Batman and denied herself — this aspect of her, I have to break the law — to be with him. She changes for Batman. Is that a good thing or bad thing? When he dies, does she revert to who she was? Or was that always what she was? It’s a look at what it means to be alive in a very comic book way. -- Tom King

I had this revelation.... Well, not a revelation, but I was rereading Love and Rockets and I have always done these transitions with captions; then I read how Hernandez was doing it and how they had two panels apart and it be like a year later and no indication of that and it was up to the reader to figure that out. The writer trusted me to figure that out. So what you have in these three books is my abandonment on a technical level on those devices. On some level, that feels more real and you get a sense of what life is like as sometimes I don't notice how time goes by. The reader has that magic of going 'Wait, where am I? Ah, yes now I understand!' and you see the passing of time not with captions but the actual story. So this takes place in three different timelines. -- Tom King

It's almost like I feel I never got to do something as elevated as Vision or Mister Miracle with Batman. Because it was double-shipped and because we had the artists who had to ship monthly and just because we all had regular life, it's a book that had to be a kind of sprint/marathon. And I'm super proud of it. But we never got to go super deep like I did with those 12 issues minis. And then now I get to sort of do that with Clay on Bat/Cat. We get to do, like I said, a kind of Dark Knight Returns standalone thing. And those are the things I loved writing. -- Tom King

I remember putting this on the board for DC and Bendis coming up to me. He told me 25 issues of Batman suffering was gonna be tough on my audience. But dude, you need to be knocked down before you can get the fuck up again. -- Tom King

Tony draws physically, so Tony's going to sell those pages. If I don't give Tony a beautiful splash page, if I just give him people talking, then I feel like I'm taking money out of Tony's pocket, you know? It doesn't do any good to fuck over my artist. And Mitch, Mitch likes drawing everyday stuff, and he draws digitally. So I give him everyday stuff! Or, Clay's a mega fan of Magnum, P.I. Like, a mega fan. So we're going to do something in Hawaii so he can watch Magnum, P.I. while he draws all day. You adjust the arc, to make it help your partner. That's how you make good comics. -- Tom King

What’s awesome about BATMAN is I’ve been planting these seeds forever and now I’m just watching them grow. So going all the way back to issue 5, which is way far back, we showed that Gotham Girl has the power to take down the entire Justice League in about 30 seconds. So, when we talk about a city controlled by Bane, you might ask, why doesn’t Superman just come down and end it? Why doesn’t the Justice League take it over? Because they’ve got an atom bomb. Bane’s not working with someone who can shove a staff in your face, he’s working with someone who can punch Green Lantern into the next galaxy. -- Tom King

"I want to make everybody happy, I just don't do it. The failure's my fault, not yours. And if I could write some legitimately fun story that everyone loved, I'd write it in two seconds. But for me to write good, it has to be this weird, personal stuff, and the weird, personal stuff tends to scratch at these heroes, and get them to places where some people don't want to see them go.

"That said, I face this time and again, this is kind of what I do. I tear down heroes to their essential components and build them back up. I mean, to the first page in Mister Miracle, he's bleeding out, he's cut his own wrist. The first issue of Omega Men, Kyle Rayner gets his neck chopped open, the first issue of The Vision has his daughter being stabbed through the heart, right?

"This is sort of what I do, but at the end of the day, hopefully people say "oh, he had some respect for that Mister Miracle, he wasn't just doing it to be mean, he was actually doing it to exploit his character and to elevate the character." Mister Miracle went through hell, but now everybody knows who Mister Miracle is, right? Same with Vision, I put him through hell. I had him almost turn into absolute evil, but it elevated that character a little bit, and now they're doing the TV show which, you know, had something to do with my stuff."

We are looking at every single character, hundreds of superheroes, the same way we looked at Scott Free in Mister Miracle. There's no worlds blowing up or merging or little Lex Luthors trying to escape from things. I’m just tired of having the world end and everything. I feel like we’ve seen the world end. Sometimes I think every day we are looking at our own world ending. -- Tom King
