between SUPER TASTELESS OFFENSIVE POSTS and ACTUALLY REALLY INSIGHTFUL POSTS, as opposed to their usual "maybe it's a little funny but not really and it's a bit offensive too so..." posts.

Here's something insightful from Monday's update. But I have to warn you, do NOT look at the previous update. It offended even me! And yet, if you agree that Matt Murdock's a bit of a manwhore, it's pretty true.

.... But back to the comic at hand:

"A women"? WE NEED EDITORS HERE, STAT.

But "which doctor" "which companion" is a win for me.

FYI, that's Al Pacino's monologue from Scent of a Woman. I don't really see the humor either, but the joke is more about the fact that both characters are blind than "Matt says offensive things."

Oh, Gail Simone. Recently I forget how funny you can be.

This kinda reminds me of her book "You'll All Be Sorry." It'd be nice if she started doing articles again, but I guess she's pretty busy nowadays.

The mail in portion was great. By and large, I don't even find the elitism among geeks to be about gender lines, so much as, well, trying for elitism (though obviously Gail's pointing out the unique plight of ladies in the fandoms). The nerds have a growing social group they can begin to assert dominance in, so they like to be, y'know, raging assholes to anyone who isn't as "real" or "legit" as them in their fandom, making themselves feel empowered for placing themselves above others. Which is laughable for so very many reasons. IT'S FANDOM. Everybody likes some stuff, everybody dislikes other stuff. There's no winning or succeeding at it. (Though there is "getting it" or "not getting it.")

On the subject of the previous Gutters comic: How many people were getting the Al Pacino Scent of a Woman ref, and that it was more of a dig at Joe Carnahan (he of the Smokin' Aces, The A Team and The Grey) than anything comics related? And though I should be sending this off to Ryan Sohmer, a "sizzle reel" (also called a demo reel) is more often than not a video resume of past work. So the whole comic doesn't make much sense since that's not at all what Joe would be sending around. That would be a treatment or outline pitch.

(You're right, tho, an extended Scent of a Woman riff, just because both characters happen to be blind and making arguments in "courtroom settings," isn't very funny)

EDIT: And flithysize beats me to it :)

Geeks are elitist by nature, yes. But there's a special vicious kind that targets women. It all stacks up.

The comic part of this felt so confusing.

The rest was all good.

I don't know if woman are the only people who get this though. Elitists are elitists, and will cut down anyone they can.

I think women get it worse, especially cosplayers, who are often accused of just dressing up to get male attention.

I feel like the fact that the actual costumes themselves tend to be specifically designed to "show off the goods" as it were, isn't really helping with those accusations, since it means that an accurate costume is also a very revealing costume.

Accurate representations of costumes that are designed to appeal to the male gaze are probably gonna appeal to the male gaze, it's true. But having an attraction or reaction to something doesnt excuse spewing rude and noisy opinions all over the con centre or internet - personal responsibility can't be ignored by the audience, even if their first impression is that the cosplayer is neglecting their own. Writing a comment in judgement of someone based on clothing choice is the cue to look at one's own prejudices, not to hit "post".

I see that your comment is about the climate of female representation in the official books and is placing responsibility on the companies who own the costume trademarks! *general elaboration on the point*

Yeah, I'm confused by how The Gutters keeps going back and forth between genuinely insightful commentary on comics and the culture surrounding them, and some really, really stupid jokes.

I kinda wish it ended at "I don't give a shit about what that lardhead says." That's really all anyone needs to do with someone is a jerk.

I know it's a parody of Charles Atlas ad but oh my god do we have enough of those.

Coming out on top means beating up people now? It's not being passive-aggressive to just not care about what some stranger thinks about you. Or since it's obviously drawn with the intention that he looks stupid too she could have turned around and made fun of him. It would have made more sense in the context instead of her suddenly getting muscular for no apparent reason.

Just because you have something doesn't mean you HAVE to use it. Unless of course, you're creating a causality loop, in which case you should.
