It doesn't seem like a lot of people like Spider-Man's new sidekick, Alpha. But he isn't the first Spidekick. Let's look at one, um, unforgettable other.
I just like the way Venom seems to be treating his fucking stupid early 90's pitch as the tagline for a film. Because turning the ultimate Anti-Spider-Man into a quasi-heroic figure was SUCH a good move.
Honestly, you could've kept things nice and simple with just Venom. No other symbiotes, just him as an anti-Peter and and Anti-Spidey.
The whole Alpha thing reminds me mostly of this one Spider-Man comic I read years ago. There was some new wanna-be superhero in it who kept ignoring everything Spider-Man said while constantly trying to get Spider-Man to show him the ropes. He had some sort of generic supersuit that let him do the usual things: fly, shoot energy beams, I think he had a magnetic belt buckle that he used to disarm crooks?
The only things I really remember are I think the suit had a malfunction and needed to reboot in the middle of a fight; also, at one point a baby fell out a window (as I recall, due to the magnetic belt buckle yanking the guy holding it, causing him to drop it out the window). Spider-Man had to jump out and use his webbing to catch it, and was wondering whether this would cause the guy to reflect on responsibility and how his actions could endanger others... and for a moment it looked like he would, but then he went right back to his usual persona. Also the issue ended I think with him gloryhounding during a TV interview.
Anyone remember who that guy was or what happened to him?
...okay, someone needs to do a master post of Spidekicks because the only one I heard of before Alpha was Frog-Man and apparently there was a lot of them.
