I was gonna say the same thing, but then he went all "I'm in love", so.... not insane, just not completely sane (not that anyone in love, AI or human, is).
No, it's pretty nuts. Like HAL 9000 nuts. The talk about covering his steps, stuff like that, the really rather defiant attempts to stop them fiddling with him? Totally HAL.
"I won't let you endanger Miss Potts" comes up in the next page. BUT JARVIS didn't say outright he was in love with Pepper. Maybe it's a sort of ownership devotion to Pepper for being his pilot. And Wyche IS a fine man. So wait, Pepper is in a relationship with Wyche.... and she leaves the JARVIS helmet on the bedside table every night.... So he'd know what he's talking about, calling Wyche a fine man.
It's also likely that he's in love with Tony and protecting Pepper is important because it's important to Tony...but I'm gonna go with 'in love with Pepper' on this one. :)
I love how the guy is all, "he's not insane cause we didn't program him to be insane" and then the AI is like, "I'm in love!" Did they program him to feel that? Kind of doubt it. Or, hey, did you program him to attack his creators and then tie them up? Kind of doubt that, as well. I'll never stop finding it hilarious in movies/books/whatever how people will create artificial intelligence and then insist that the AI can't do certain things because it wasn't "programmed" that way, even though it's clear that the AI has evolved or isn't working the way it's supposed to. Kind of reminds me of watching Prometheus where they are like, "This is David. He doesn't have a soul or feelings or anything, so feel free to be massive dicks to him" and I'm just sitting there going, "Oh crap, he's going to kill everyone, isn't he?"
It's an interesting thing that kept cropping up in Brubaker's Books of Doom series, where Doom kept making robots that thought that they were people before he worked out how to install some blocks to their intelligence so they'd take orders.
Considering what happened with Pym's robots and Tony's/Pepper's suit, that might actually be a reoccurring thing in the Marvel Universe.
I was going to say, that's partly why I find it difficult to believe they're in disbelief that JARVIS could potentially be insane. This is the Marvel Universe where, you know, Blade Runner is basically already a reality, given the prevalence of Doombots, LMDs, previous sentient armours, Ultron models and all the ones HE made afterwards, and even projects like Livewires, where I think it was actually in their coding to develop beyond their initial parameters. It's ridiculous to say 'he can't be insane because we didn't program him to be insane' - I'm pretty sure Hank Pym didn't give Ultron genocide protocol, but the thing's sure as hell committed it.
Indeed. "We didn't program him to be insane..." OH WOW REALLY WELL I'M SURE ALL THOSE PEOPLE WHOSE MACHINES WENT AGAINST THEM PUT INSANITY IN THE PROGRAMMING SOMEWHERE.
Then again what can we expect from a team that developed something called "the swarm?" Even the media in-comic commented on how creepy the name was.
Some sort of Freudian (programming) slip! Ha. I like that idea. Especially from a psychological stand point- because, seriously, if you keep creating AIs that fall in love and then take their primary users hostage, you've probably got some very interesting issues lurking in your subconscious.
The only comfort I take from this is the fact that Tony's track record with AIs is that, though they went a bit axe-crazy, they were devoted to him enough to protect him.
Which is what JARVIS is doing now, which is.... well. Okay? I guess?
Tony >_> Tony tony tony tony I want there to be some kind of side story where Tony's AIs mutate--I MEAN develop so much that they become his sort of adolescent, hormonal robot kids.

I know! Why does everyone just assume that of COURSE humans are so hot that life forms with completely different configurations are going to be crushing on us?
Why is it we hardly ever see AIs infatuated with each other? Robot/Human is actually the norm compared to Robot/Robot, I'd give a lot to see two digital personalities figuring out how to act on a romantic impulse.

Wouldn't that be an awesome premise for a SF novel, though? It's the Planet of Hats trope [TVTropes, duh], only Earth is the planet of prostitutes.
JARVIS could divide crimefighting and lovin' into separate subroutines and do both at the same time. "You leave the hard work to me and just enjoy the new attachment I installed inside myself, Pepper." "MMMMMMMMmmmmm...."

Pepper: ......
But honestly, who can blame the AI for falling in love? I love Pepper and I'm not even into girls.
