skjam: Ghost cat in a fez (fez)

And now, a story from Daredevil #105 (December 1953.) As you'll recall from a previous post, by this time Daredevil himself had long left the comic book, leaving it to his sidekicks, the Little Wise Guys. But the Guys, while not superheroes, weren't exactly "normal teenagers."

And the Archie comics had proved that "normal teenager" sold, so Daredevil had a second feature, "Dilly Duncan." And that's what we're going to see today. Howsomever, since this is a Lev Gleason publication, it's not all dates and gags for our wholesome lad....

"But isn't welfare Communism?"

And now a couple of ads from the issue.

Right then.

Hope you're enjoying your Labor Day or 3rd of September!

And Dilly's reputation is saved, thanks to a young Stephen Colbert! ;)

Those smoking cowboy and glamor-girl baby dolls are creeping me out...

The main cartoon creeps me out. A bunch of characters look like heroin addicts dying for a fix; seriously, see how many panels you could swap out the existing dialogue with, "Come one, man, you know I'm good for it, I just need a little taste to see me through, man...

They look like teens pre-carbonated sugar water with every meal to me. Heck, I looked like that as a teen.

Yup, dolls are creepy by definition, but they clearly worked hard to make those things particularly strong nightmare fuel.

I am most definitely enjoying my 3rd of September and Labour Day, thanks. It's always nice to be able to stay home on one's birthday. ^_^

With regards to the comic itself, yeah I got nothing. Aside from the fact that I didn't know it cost $5 in 1953 to do your laundry. (That seriously stood out to me). o.O

Sadly, our chances on obtaining this scientific marvel seem to be rather diminished. A look at Google Earth reveals that "State of the Art Wood Flooring Group" now occupies that address. :) We also seem to have missed out on one, at the bargain collector price of $230. :p That's what.. a 11,500% investment opportunity?
