Previously in Planet Hulk
The Hulk often says he wants to be left alone, but the truth is he is always looking for friends. It's basically the abused child in him coming out - he wants to form friendships, but he's afraid of being hurt. Well, he's about to open his heart up again as Planet Hulk: Exile continues.
(7 pages from Incredible Hulk #94)
Last issue ended with a bunch of rebels breaking into the pleasure cruiser the Hulk was on and asking him to fight for them. Here's where the story breaks from being just Gladiator in space.
This might seem overly cynical, but remember that the big guy wound up on Sakaar because he tried to play hero and the puny humans decided he needed to be sent away.
Most of the Hulk's allies follow the Hulk's lead, and the Death's Head guards take out the rebels. Elloe goes with them, though, and Lavin Skee later laments that she's the only one who made the right choice.
After dinner, the Hulk is brought before a rather intriguing visitor:
I've been calling her Caiera, but her name actually hasn't been revealed yet in the story. In the recap pages, she's just referred to as Lieutenant. Still, she's so obviously the female romantic lead from the get-go that it's not even funny. But the cool part is that she's a very good romantic partner for the Hulk. Usually, the Hulk winds up paired with a frail lady who is better suited for Banner or who serves as a prize for the Hulk to protect. The exception would be Jarella, an alien princess who loved both the Hulk and Banner. Caiera takes a page out of Jarella's book, but ups the ante by being a true physical match for the Hulk.
The Hulk's motives are pretty hard to figure here. I personally think he's just rattling Caiera's cage a bit. Later on, he'll actually want to go to the steppes she's mentioning.
The Hulk and his companions wind up back in the Great Arena, but the Red King cheats to make sure they don't make it three rounds and win their freedom:
You could make a drinking game out of the number of times somebody here tells the Hulk he can't do something only for him to get angry and do it. Again, it's basically the child in him showing through. He's a big stubborn kid who happens to have the power to do what most kids want.
Things go bad for the gladiators, and Lavin Skee winds up being critically wounded by the Death's Head guards sent by the Red King to mop up. Then the Hulk reappears.
Lavin Skee dies, but the gladiators win the day. That night, they tell each other about their origins. The Hulk gives an interesting take on the reason Banner built the gamma bomb:
The Hulk thinks Banner tried to kill him with the gamma bomb. Except the Hulk didn't exist in physical form at that point. Was Banner running out to save Rick Jones a subconscious attempt to kill himself, thus killing the Hulk as well?
Finally, the gladiators agree to become Warbound to each other, standing by one another's side no matter what might come. The Hulk joins in the oath, gaining new friends only a day or two after he pretty much shrugged them off when they offered an alliance in the Maw.
The Red King still has one more trick up his sleeve to stop the Hulk from gaining his freedom, though. His name is the Silver Surfer.
