The backup add a heartfelt look at Krypto bond with Superman throughout his life in the phantom zone and how he was always by clark side even though his master couldn't see him.
The main story of superman saving Krypto from the phantom zone.
It's something different--basically the story is a "Halloween story" in that it involves "phantoms," and on the last page, the Kryptonian villain of the issue, stuck again in the Phantom Zone, is confronted by The Little Man, a fifth dimensional imp who recruits him for his Anti-Superman Army, which we saw earlier in Action Comics #5/6.
And is it just me, or does this design for Krypto look a mite like Neil Gaiman's dog, Cabal? If that was the inspiration, yay, although I'll miss Krypto having the same build as my own dog, so that he looks like a color reversed version of him (Krypto white, Jack black).
No, he's not Jack Black the actor, whom I like in small doses and mostly in Tenacious D. His name is just Jack, but he happens to have black fur where Krypto has white, but otherwise look almost like his twin... the way he used to be drawn. He's a mut, a Lab/terrier mix who somehow looks somewhat like a beagle.
Between this and the aggressively heartwarming zero issue, I think Morrison is finally firing on all cylinders with this book, it's a pity he'll be leaving it soon. I like that even in the XTREMELY XTREME current paradigm Morrison can still bring back Krypto, because he's Grant Morrison and that's just what he does. Totally not crying by the way. Totally.
