Please tell me why we need scenes with characters like Spider-Man and Wolverine and Falcon, of all people, needing to be persuaded into joining the Avengers again? Even with AvX, these people ALL ENDED UP ON THE SAME SIDE against the Phoenix Five. The newer characters like Manifold, I can understand, but the others? Really?
Maybe they're trying to forget that hot mess ever happened? I know I would if I were writing this too. And as for someone who is in the same situation, I loved Spider-Man's reason for joining. Wolverine would be a close second. No wonder he's on so man teams if that's is only reason for joining.
The best reason I can think of is that Hickman wrote those with people who had never read the Avengers before now and are only familiar with the movie in mind--hence why the first issue started out with the movie cast. What's even stranger is that in a not-scanned scene where Steve and Tony are going over the final roster, Steve asks why Luke Cage wasn't on there.
The book is very obviously written with the potential movie audience in mind. The original team to go to Mars in #1 is the movie team, so Cap spends #2 gathering and introducing the backup team for the sake of people who might never have seen them before. If you're a long-time comics fan, you can brush it off as Cap and Tony asking for participation in a new organizational method.
The art is... weird. Carol and... err, the other woman... are especially sharp. And by sharp I mean full of pointy bits. Yes, having bones is a bonus, but you don't have to push them all the way through your skin to brag about them.
Funny enough the image of Carol makes me remember that she was a Colonel in the Air Force long before she became a superhero and apparently knew Wolverine Pre Weapon-X.
Realistically, Carol should be in her mid-late forties at the youngest, though of course cosmic superpowers might slow down the aging process and I'm sure in comic book reality she somehow got promoted to Colonel while in her mid-20's or something.
But anyway, that picture (to me) made her look a more realistic age, so I like it from that perspective.
And if anyone's watched Sym-Bionic Titan, Carol's sporting the same hair do as Illyana... not the greatest look here.
Anywho, these things are always nice, it's a tad confusing, but nice. Is uh... Wolverine an alcoholic? I was just thinking the other day, his healing factor stops the drink from getting him drunk right (I remember reading that several times)? So why does he drink so much?
Being thankful for getting paid when you're otherwise broke is considered shallow, self obsessed arsehole behaviour? Though, its very likely this is the 'Superior' Spidey, who we know is a shallow, self absorbed arsehole, so its nothing wrong with the writers, its not their fault that that's how they have to writ him like that.
IMHO, it's just Peter (that looks like the Amazing suit, and this seems to be predate Superior) and Tony goofing around for the sake of having fun.
Going back to the sort of chemistry they had pre-Civil War: that's one of the things I do miss, and he was doing fine as Stark's assistant well before joining Horizon Labs.
Also, the whole piece doesn't seem to take itself too seriously. See Wolvie's reaction, or Sam getting 'Berto to agree just by mentioning Cap. And Carol's just in touch with her inner badass.
I was trying to think who Steve reminded me of in that bottom panel, and he looks like a cross between Steve McQueen and Peter Cushing. It's not a good look.
I like the art on the scan with Carol and Jessica. Carol has a more rounded nose but a narrower head and larger ears. Her eyes are more almond shaped and her lips are thinner. Jessica has sharper features but a more rounded head and fuller lips. Even though they both have the same confident expression, their poses show their personalities. Jessica is being coy and classy about it while Carol is being more brusque.
So does anything actually happen this issue beyond some glib recruitment scenes? I picked up the #1 but skipped this issue due to the annoying lack of actual content in the first issue, which seemed to boil down to a mission statement and virtually nothing else, so I'd like to see the team actually get down to business. I mean, I want to like this book since Hickman's Fantastic Four seems to be very highly regarded and I wanted to get in on the ground floor of his next work, but man, that first issue just didn't have a lot of stuff that I actually liked.
Its a new armour that's made of liquid tech (imagine the second Terminator movie's t-1000, only actually capable of forming engines and guns) so he can access any spcialized feature (repulsar, laser, space tech, camouflage/hologram tech, etc), but with the downsized of not being quite as powerful. I'd recommend the new Iron Man series really. Art's not perfect, but the story is awesome.

Date: 2012-12-21 04:30 pm (UTC)Honestly, it looked so much better when it was just short hair. Now nobody knows how to draw it. It just ends up quasi-mullet.
Good for Sam and Roberto, though.

Date: 2012-12-21 07:39 pm (UTC)Of all the reasons to become an Avenger, "Because Tony Stark has an idea about tech-enhanced martial arts" makes the least sense of the bunch.
And if I hear one more "It's just like the movie!" used to justify any story, I may experience cognitive meltdown.
